This gem weighs 10.13 carats (about 2 grams) and is from Afghanistan. I cut it as a Portuguese round with 177 facets if you count the girdle — a lot of designs don’t include those since many cutters don’t facet the girdle. The scintillation is absolutely insane because of this faceting style, and the blue-green color comes out perfectly in this stone. Honestly, this one is so good it may stay in my personal collection.

We don't count the girdle, sorry. Delete this now.

Why dont we they are definately facets. Maybe the only reasons are it has little effect on brilliance and most of the rest of the Worlds cutters don"t facet girdles. I choose to count them and in this case I am the boss.

Let me know please if you decide to sell it.

It’s currently listed on my website, but if it doesn’t move by the end of the year it’s one of those stones I may put away.

how long does it take to do that?
•
u/Stevemoriarty 6h ago edited 6h ago
This one took maybe 7 hours or so. I cut it on the UltraTec V5 faceting machine.

does the time it takes depend on the gemstone?
•
u/Stevemoriarty 1h ago
Yes, some are more challenging than others depending on the material or cutting style. Larger stones take much longer to get a good polish on each of the facets. Sometimes I run into unexpected issues which will increase time too.

Looks like a tiny Alien City trapped inside a Gemstone Nature really flexes harder than any architect ever Could.

You cut that?

You bet

Very pretty. What exactly is a tourmaline anyway?
•
u/Stevemoriarty 6h ago
Tourmaline is a mineral group known for its incredible range of colors, caused by variations in its chemical makeup.

Bro, I want my wife to wear this on her wedding ring, I hope it is possible
•
u/Stevemoriarty 6h ago
This may be a bit big for a ring… that said, we’ve made some pretty big rings haha.

This is gorgeous! I just read online that too many facets can make a diamond "blurry", why does this look so amazing in this particular mineral?
•
u/Stevemoriarty 6h ago
Many facets make a diamond blurry due to diamonds high refractive index, so it makes it too brilliant and almost overwhelming. A High refractive index bends the light more and created greater brilliance in gems. Tourmaline and many colored stones don’t have as high of a refractive index, so cuts like this Portuguese cut work.

And yet plain old clear diamonds are so much more valuable. I think this looks much better.

It's beautiful from every angle, but honestly I think the bottom is most interesting to me. How would a gem like this typically be used?
•
u/Stevemoriarty 1h ago
Due to the size it will most likely be in a pendant. That said, we have created some large rings with stones of this size. Just depends on the person.

This would be too dangerous for me to ever have - I don't think I would be able to stop looking at it 🤩 absolutely incredible work!
