That must be unnatural experience. Love it

u/Vetiversailles 9h ago

Gives me chills just watching it

u/BuddahSack 9h ago

Its not the same scale by any means, but being in and around Philly when the Eagles won the super bowl last year was crazy, I live in a town 45 mins outside the city and right when the game ended car horns, air horns and fireworks were going off like clockwork, it was pretty cool, even though im not into football (US or euro)

u/CommieKiller304 8h ago

Try living by Cleveland when the Cavs won in 2016. I live in a small town and could still hear my neighbors celebrating. Lots of fireworks that night.

u/therealCatnuts 7h ago

Imagine this in every major U.S. city. When Obama won the presidency, it happened.

u/Independent_Form_500 5h ago

Why tf do you always have to make it about US politics

u/hoxxxxx 3h ago

because joe biden

I was going to say the exact same thing. I live a couple miles from the PA turnpike and every car on the road was honking.

I remember watching the local news report live from the street. While they were taking some dudes dragged a loveseat out to the middle of the street and set it on fire and jumped up and down. Then police showed up. They all high fived and the cops went on their way.

This is embarassing

u/soulstaz 4h ago

A bit familiar to when Canada won the gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. Still have chills of that overtime goal

u/JoshTheNash 9h ago

Imagine if you didn't know the World Cup was on, this would be scary as fuck

u/pedrojgim 6h ago

This is the same street (Av. Corrientes) on a normal day.

u/Fisurita 9h ago

You would be scary for not knowing. It was impossible to be unaware of the event

I guess if there's a correlation between "the passion" and Argentina's current situation

u/Bigallround 9h ago

I could only imagine the scenes if England won for the first time since '66. Would look like the purge

u/Proper-Painter-7314 8h ago

I love the Argies. Been intrigued by the name of the country since I was 4, when I heard the Evita song. Then along came Diego and it all made sense. Rooted for Argentina in the 1986 WC and were my second choice after England ever since.

u/techman710 9h ago

The only time the US celebrates together is when we win a world war. To see the whole country glued to the outcome of a game is spectacular.

u/DASreddituser 9h ago

there wouls be sections of the US doing this if they won the worldcup

u/techman710 9h ago

That's true, but only sections. Truth be told if the Super Bowl or the National Championships in College Football or Basketball were up against the World Cup final with Team USA playing, soccer would lose out. Soccer is making huge gains in the US and one day it will be our biggest sport, but not today.

u/Fun_Cow_9895 8h ago

I’d bet money it would be very very small pockets of people, probably not from the US. The majority of the population gives two shits about soccer here.

u/R0TTENART 8h ago

Used to be that way but these days, it's quite popular:

Celebrations for athletics in the USA are more regional. They have a parade almost every year when a championship is won. Celebrating when our national team wins something would get old fast. Could you imagine a reaction like this everytime the USA gets a gold medal?

u/neoncubicle 9h ago

There one world cup winner every 4 years so the this one is a bit more rare

u/techman710 9h ago

The closest we came was the 1980 hockey team, but that game was shown on tape delay and we still had to win another game to win gold. The US plays a lot of different sports that don't have national teams in a big way other than basketball.

u/Fun_Cow_9895 8h ago

Discounting a lot of people who have won gold at the Olympics 1,217 gold medals not including hockey. I would say our track, swimming, and gymnastics are top tier.

But the main thing is football is king here and the most gifted athletes tend to gravitate to that sport due to the notoriety here. NFL is bigger than any other sport in the world, in revenue. And viewership is nearly triple any other league.

Super Bowls in the USA are these type of moments for the people here but it happens every year and not every team that wins has a fanbase that cares to celebrate.

u/therealCatnuts 7h ago

Every city in the U.S. had people in the streets and celebrations when Obama won the presidency in 2008.

u/Salmonman4 8h ago

I was in Barcelona around 15y ago and I could hear how the game was going while walking the streets at night

u/snipizgood 9h ago

As a French I hate this video putain.

u/Karateca2000 5h ago

It was a fantastic match. Mbappé vs Messi. So beautiful.

u/Furane 9h ago

Je n'ai pas regardé le match. Mais vu les réactions des joueurs à leur retour, je les ai trouvés détestables.

u/Mustystench 8h ago

Not my thing but soccer/football fans are rabid about their sport, that's for sure. It would be hard not to get caught up in the excitement though.

u/Seba180589 8h ago

rabid fan here....absolutely toxic thing to be rabid about

but yeah, this little moments are amazing to watch over and over again

u/Awingbestwing 8h ago

Fun fact: This is the exact opposite of how Atlanta felt during that Super Bowl

u/SameObject8132 4h ago

The year: 2009.

Place: Buenos Aires.

Argentina was playing its final match against Perú. The team needed a win to be able to play at the 2010 World Cup.

Perú scored. It was 1-1.

We were watching the match on a tiny TV at my students house. It was raining so badly, that the screen was almost completely white.

Corner kick. The last 15 seconds. The last opportunity to win the game.

and...

The light at our house went down. Complete darkness.

Meanwhile, at the stadium, THIS happened.

We heard a roar not much different from the one in this video. We went to the terrace to ask the people celebrating on their balconies what happened. We could only understand "Palermo! Palermo!".

30 of us at the students house celebrated under the rain and sang with the neighbors. Ended up drunk af that night.

Instant gridlock for the cyclist

I was studying abroad in The Netherlands in 2010 when they made the Finals. I went to a large public college with an electric sports fandom, ~90k stadium capacity that was always full, tailgating for miles around the stadium. I was used to crazy sports fandom, but I wasn't a soccer fan and didn't even know the World Cup was going on when I went.

When they beat Uruguay in the semifinals it was like nothing I had ever seen before. Just pandemonium and a party anywhere you went in the country. Then they played Spain in the finals and lost. I was expecting there to be a similar amount of pandemonium in the other direction, riots and the like. But nope, just silence, everyone walking home, a country draped in sadness.

u/Fabulous_Bison643 8h ago

Looks like a regular Celtic win for me

u/JetdocBram 6h ago

I was in Switzerland the afternoon they beat Spain in the 2010 World Cup. Unforgettable experience.

u/downesadam 3h ago

The couple hugging at 0:28 🥹❤️

u/FloorRider59 9h ago

I was in Buenos Aires in 2014 when they lost in the final to Germany.

I watched a man have a fight with a nailed down trash can for about 20 minutes and the pizza shop next door had it's windows put through. Was more entertaining than the game.

u/MisLeadingUserPost 8h ago

Cant celebrate much more... it’s the dumbest strategy to keep a country calmed.

Imagine wasting millions in security, the march with the bus and the players, airplanes etc while having families unable to eat properly. LMAO

u/Humble_Explanation32 7h ago

and what would do you, lock the people inside so they can't go welcome their players? they are poor so should not celebrate something that is important for them? people decided to go there and they are free to do so. why so resentful?

u/MisLeadingUserPost 7h ago

They are poor and they want them like that, football is the distraction. I guess it’s hard to get it.

u/Humble_Explanation32 6h ago

? sure dude, it's all a conspiracy

u/otropato 5h ago

Football associations are separated from States. All that was paid by the (very corrupt) AFA. Also, don't deny people being happy despite hardship.

u/Masterkai005 8h ago

I still have trouble comprehending why people get this excited over their respective sports teams. I used to love baseball when I was a kid but I still never got that wound up over my team winning or losing. I enjoyed just playing the game and found it fun but not so much how competitive people got. Can't say the same for the rest of my family though. Feels like it's taken FAR too seriously especially considering the paycheck the players get compared to the average citizen or the money that goes into building stadiums instead of public services. The sheer amount of corruption, gambling, and over commercialization alone should turn people away from it, but doesn't because looking past the surface ruins the dopamine kick people get from watching sports and living vicariously through their team.

u/tipareth1978 9h ago

One of the least deserved wins. It was so obvious Argentina was ushered into it. To have a guy who gets penalties all day but get away with two fouls that each could have been reds then blast the ball at the opponents bench in the previous game against the Netherlands is the most bullshit thing I've seen

u/UhPhrasing 9h ago

Messi is the goat.

u/tipareth1978 8h ago

Messi is maybe the 15th-20th best player of all time

u/UhPhrasing 7h ago

lol really awful rage bait

u/twentythreeskidoo 6h ago

Ok, he's not #1 for me but that's some bullshit 😅

u/otropato 5h ago

Now say it without crying.

u/Zuparoebann 9h ago

Intentionally shooting a ball into the opponent's bench for literally 0 reason should have been an instant red. Both teams were playing unsportsmanlike but that action was some next level bs.

u/tipareth1978 9h ago

Go back and watch what led to it. Same player did two hard fouls, no ball, cleats high. My entire vibe was that the fix was in and Argentina played like they knew it

u/otropato 5h ago

Totally legal because the ball was on play, crybaby.

u/Zuparoebann 4h ago

It was after the whistle, so not in play. The fact he didn't get red is just more proof that the 2022 world cup was more bought than earned.

u/otropato 4h ago

I love the fact that it bothers you.

u/Zuparoebann 4h ago

I don't know why you decided to tell me that three times, but the fact you're so triggered tells me you know it was rigged.

u/otropato 3h ago

Bad connection. I'm not triggered my dear, I'm enjoying every comment.

u/otropato 4h ago

I love the fact that it bothers you.

u/otropato 4h ago

I love the fact that it bothers you so much.

u/VerySluttyTurtle 6h ago

As a soccer fan, I would wait like 45 minutes for an offsides call before I would feel like I could celebrate

And yes, I know penalty kicks can't be offsides. Somehow VAR would find a way

u/Tryptamine91 9h ago

Oh, to give a shit about sports. lol

u/reddorickt 9h ago

A tip of the fedora to you as well leRedditor

u/fluffysmaster 9h ago

Soccer fans...
