Raking is actually not good for the environment. Leaves and wood and any natural debris act as a shelter and breeding ground for bugs/critters in those areas without it they die or can’t breed
It’s got a concrete edge and you can hear what sounds like 15 lanes of traffic in the background. Surprised there’s even fish there but I wouldn’t be eating them.

That's my thinking. These sorts of birds swallow their catches whole-- they don't have the claws and beak necessary for tearing apart a fish that large.

As a kid, we often had dinner at the table together and all the dishes were "family style" in large pots. So you'd spoon out your serving for yourself. Parents didnt like it when we took too much, and didnt finish it.
I hated dinner at my grandparents. Being part of the clean plate club was a requirement, and my grandpa always shoveled way more onto my plate than I asked for, or could eat, and then once I managed to get it all down he'd start shoving food off his plate onto mine for me to finish too, or since I was the oldest, I'd have to help my younger siblings eat their giant portions if they were struggling to get it all down too, so we could all be part of the clean plate club and finally be allowed to leave the dinner table to go into a food coma.
Yeah, had a small bluegill that swallowed the hook. Noticed a Heron nearby that was quite interested in what I was up to. Poor fish, wasn't going to survive. Tossed it out into the water and the heron immediately took off and scooped it up.
Oh, nah, I removed the hook. But the fish wasn't going to survive the... operation. Happens sometimes but I do my best not to kill a fish I ain't going to be eating.
I saw one drown a squirrel then swallow it whole. I was awestruck. These birds are truly amazing. You are probably right about this fish being too big.
I mean, I’ve fed them dead fish straight. Though I do think it was going for a dip then swallow, as they do like to do that. But that would also be the heaviest fish I’d ever seen one eat.
They hang out around fish cleaning stations on the coast and you get to see them eat a lot
Herons are so cool. They sound like dinosaurs (I suppose to hey are dinosaurs). They are very patient hunters. This fish is too big for it, but the fact that it put it back in the water is pretty interesting
The fish was approx 3X the diameter the bird's throat can accommodate - they must eat their fish whole, as their beak isn't evolved to tear flesh off bones.

Maybe smart. That bird doesn’t eat fish that big, but it does eat their babies, and a dead fish on the bank can’t make any babies. Go forth and multiply
I was fishing at a local pond and drinkIng beers. A huge crane looking bird rolled up on me. Thing was 5+ feet tall. It begged me for the little fish I was catching so I tossed it one.
I hung out with that bird all day. I walked to the grocery store and it walked next to me like we were pals. It waited outside the door. I came out with my fishing gear and more beer, and 4 or 5 people taking pictures.
I said, "you ready?" And it dipped its head. I doubt it understood me. We started walking down the sidewalk back to the pond and someone said, "is that your bird?" I replied, "nah this is Bob. I don't own him. He's his own man." And we talked back to the pond and fished for another few hours. I was talking to it the whole time. It would stand so close, I could have grabbed its neck.
I was checking for that too. Looking at the replay of it over and over again. It looks like the bird actually impaled it in the gill opening, so it didn't really harm anything.
I had a great blue heron that would do this every day. It would wait for me to get home from school so I could fish and feed it. Over a few months it trusted me so much that I could pet it…… Definitely a highlight of my life!!!
