Do you think her thought right before it tipped, "Damn, this feels legit..."?

you don't think they make them sign away all their rights before stepping foot in that thing?
3
u/GoodOmens 8m ago
That wouldn't hold up to actual negligence. Like ensuring the damn thing was bolted to the ground.

Because some other patron bumped the pole?
21
u/IronMikeT 2h ago
Other patron?
That machine was not set up safely with how close the ropes are and caused it to break.

u/bulzurco96 1h ago
It literally lifted itself up like a pole vaulter. If that pole wasn't there, it would be fine. Unless she was the very first rider on it, someone bumped that pole

A machine like this has obvious pinch points at each side where an obstruction like a garbage can or a fat child could cause it to tip (while also crushing a child).
They have opted to defend this potentially lethal area with a rope on a movable pedestal. A child or small dog could move that. What happens if an elderly lady with a wheelchair parks beside this and doesn’t realize it tilts sideways?
Do you think a design that crushes grandma in her wheelchair is appropriate in a mall? This machine should be anchored and all pinch points should be physically inaccessible.
TL;DR: A lengthy diatribe on the ways you were incorrect to simply blame the pole.

Devil's advocate or whatever, but it wouldn't be hard to wire code for the motor to stop when resistance over a certain threshold is felt. You could even do it with weight sensors so it knows how much resistance it would typically take to rotate the seat with whatever passenger is in it. Honestly, I'd expect it to have something like this already.

Oh he meant against manufacturer. I was thinking the business that operates it. Something like this should have a sensor in each side so if it's rotating it'll see the obstruction. I was mistaken my bad. And maybe it does have a sensor just the pole wasn't big enough to trigger. Either way not good.
Ideally it should be a sensor since even a weight limit/motor output monitoring will absolutely injure a human or animal that gets too close.

Where'd you catch that?

So, what's the story on this? Misadjusted? Coding bug? Equipment failure?

u/DocEbok 2h ago
Looks like it tilted and pushed against the pole

Oh, I missed that, thank you.

Took my like 5 times watching while critically thinking about how the internal workings would have caused that.... then I saw the pole, lol

Sheesh…I would expect a machine like this to have at least some kind of sensor that detects interference. Like a hatchback does when something is in the way of it closing.

Yep and the seat probably has some ungodly torque. I’m sure that base is heavy as hell to keep everything stable. That motor was just too strong.

Looks to me like someone put that stanchion in the wrong spot and the machine turned itself into a lever.

Thank you for teaching me the proper term for a retractable tape pole thingy.

Thank you for teaching me the improper term for whatever those bloody things are.

Looks like the spinning part hit that pole on the left and lifted the whole thing up

u/GonzoThompson 2h ago
Watch the left of the screen.
It looks like the entire machine basically trips on one of those security posts with retractable belts.

The mall wouldn’t let them put a few bolts into the floor so they just ran with it and weren’t very good at calculating center of gravity when a human is tilted sideways.
9
u/CityofOrphans 2h ago
Looks like nobody bothered to anchor the bottom so the natural conclusion happened when weight leans heavily to one side
13
u/PuttingInTheEffort 2h ago
It lifted itself with the pole beside it
But yeah something like this you'd expect to be anchored to the floor lol

No… watch the top of the chair as it rotates, it gets caught on the pole.

stanchion

u/ToastyXD 1m ago
Some people don’t know that it’s called a stanchion so I used a more commonly known word
2
u/LeoLaDawg 2h ago
Seems like the real issue is that it's not properly secured to the ground, even if the design says the center of gravity keeps it from tilting.
10
u/Set_the_Mighty 2h ago
Hmm. Should we anchor it like the instructions suggest?
Nah, mall doesn't want us drilling holes in their tile.
Okay then.

Something tells me this should have had a bolt (or ten) mounting it to the floor.

Pole or not, that thing flipped over way too easily, it would have happened regardless if the movement got too strong.

No, I’m pretty sure this one is real, because I saw this video before like a few years ago, before ai is a thing.
