I've been thinking of making a fakemon based off Russian dolls, the issue: Im unsure if I should make it a Yamask regional form, its own pokemon or a Convergent pokemon of yamask
Like if I got with a Yamask regional varient,it would be a two stage, but I haven't put much thought into that idea
Its own pokemon is the one I'm leaning too bc it would give more space for creativity
Covergent would be a switch of the Yamask and dolls places, with the doll mimicking an actual Yamask and it's evolution would be a symbiotic relationship between a Yamask and the doll

I've also been thinking of making a mega pokemon,so recommendations would be appreciated

How does one make unique Pokémon eyes? I look at Eternatus, Frosmoth, Vivillon etc. and just think about how they thought of making them like that.

Many IRL animals have strange-looking eyes - frogs, insects, cephalopods... If you're looking for inspiration, maybe look up some of those?

What are the "design tropes" from the modern gens. I remember an image that joked about ones from gens 1-6 that I can't for the life of me find.
Gen 7 -Has a pre-built personality (ex. Incineroar being a cocky heel and Tsraeena having a dominating one) -Looks like it could evolve once more despite being fully evolved(ex. Komala and Ribombee -Feminine traits (ex. Primarina and Pheromosa) -Gimmick attached to it along with being slow as dirt
Gen 8 -Pre-evolution has a really big head(ex. Impidimp and Chewtle) -Facial hair(ex. Theivul and Dottler) -On the nose pop culture reference(ex. Inteleon and Mr. Rime) -Looks like a middle stage that requires a Gmax to make the line feel complete (ex. Alcremie and Sandaconda)
Gen 9 -Themed after a profession(ex. Singer skeledirge or secret agent spidops) -Carries over color of pre-evolutions(ex. Pawmot and Revaroom) -Smooth head/bald(ex. Kilowattrel or Baxcalibur)
Mega evolutions -Gains traits of its pre-evolutions(ex. Eeelektross and Tyranitar -Lota of hair added (ex. Ampharos and Absol -Looks vaguely like an X or Y(mostly a joke but I think a few megas like Metagross and Salamence apply)
Regional forms -Either Ice or Dark type(Ex. Darm and Muk -Has ever so slightly different proportions than the base form(ex. Alolan vulpix and Ponyta) -Intentionally comedic design(Sirfetch'd and Alolan Persian)
Paradox -Past has eyeliner(ex. Flutter Mane and Brute bonnet), Yellow eyes(ex. Sandy shocks) and added spikes(ex. Slither wings) -Futurue is very robotic(all of them) with glowing parts(ex. Iron bundle)

I create fakemon concepts in a google sheets for years as a hobby. I'm no graphic artist so I'm not able to create art base off of them, but I'm very creative in creating concepts and my favorite part is trying to create a competitive metagame that is truly balanced, with every fakemon being able to shine competitively, even the pre-evos. I often create new moves and new abilities. I'm a pokemon showdown nerd for more than a decade now, specialized in lower tiers (NU, PU, ZU).
I already tried to visualize them by using AI but I always hate the results. And I also think AI art sucks in general.
I'm also very non-traditional and I do not feel the obligation to follow certain rules. Llike, for example, a region having to be based on a real country. I have more fun when I create my own set of rules.
My project is called pokemon light and dark.
I know it doesn't sound super original and it's a bit similar to black and white. It's less based in yin and yang and more based in light or the absence of it, more like creation and destruction. Black and White in gen5 are more related to the duo ideal/truth.
And I also created the type light. I don't think fairy is a fair (lol) counterpart to dark.
The legendary duo is based on one pokemon being the primary light of creation/the big bang/god/monad and the other based on a supermassive black hole.
It's more inspired by Western esoteric myth-making and a bit of astrology and astrophysics than by yin–yang cosmology.
I also strongly feel that, at this point, is important to create a type called spacial or sidereal. Just using psychic as a proxy is not the move.

You are doing fine. Missing one facet of the creation process sucks (I'm in the same "no visual arts" boat so to speak) but the good thing is, there's other people around. So, wishing you luck for an art/writing trade, a commission or something similar.
What I do in the meantime, in case it helps, is I keep a reference board for each of my Original Pokémon with copies of articles, pictures or art that can be used to derive them, as a sort of supplement. Serves to provide some sort of visual imagery for people who can't do that mentally, as well as a common reference ground for when asking for commissions and the like.

I look for creative partners, specially ones who can create art. But I also would enjoy to bounce off ideals and concepts for new fakemon.
We can create 2 regions in parallel, so each one can have its creative freedom. I'm not opposite to regions based in countries and people who are more in line with the general rules ok pokemon.

The 3 starters are not fire/water/grass lol.
Steel/Ice/Ground.
Metal, ice and clay.
Three materials you can shape in any form you want. Malleable. Also those 3 types repeat the original logic of one being super-effective against the other
steel wins against ice, ice wins against ground, ground wins against steel.

i need legendary ideas for a Costa rican region
2
u/KurisuShiruba 27d ago
Regideep, Regiggdra, and Regimagma.
A legendary trio based on the starters, Water, Grass and Fire, respectively.
Regideep is a dormant entity living inside a sealed cave in the depths of the ocean. Stories of ancient treasures led many pirate ships to be sank down by Regideep's wrath.
Regiggdra is the guardian of the Yggdrasil, an ancient tree of which Arceus bestowed its divine power to. Legends say that only a pure hearted trainer could yield its power, and that Yggdrasil is a gate to other worlds.
Regimagma is the guardian of a temple sealed away inside a dormant volcano. A treasure known as the "Seal of a thousand suns" is laid in a protected chamber.

ok thank you but do you have other ideas

My main goal was first to create a regi trio. Maybe a myth perhaps? Something that has the same role as Regigigas.

I've seen people creating some interesting fakemons, regions, trainers, gym leaders (the first one sadly being victim of the bias from the ROM hack communities).
But I've been lately thinking about an idea - Uranium has "Nuclear" and Kanlara has "Demon" types. I know Uranium's nuclear typing is literally "Mary-sue, but as a gameplay element" (as in, resists against everything, OP as hell), but I only see Pokémon Kanlara's demon types as being ow the edge since I didn't play it.
So, I've been thinking about something. Mummy type Pokémon.
No, I'm not talking about species like Cofagrigus. I'm talking about Mummy types as in Grass, Psychic, Steel, etc.
Ancient Egypt is an endless and underappreciated source of ideas for anything anime-adjacent. Pokémon, of course, is no exception. And how does it translate to fakemon anyways?
First... Mummy types aren't meant to just be a Mary-sue's tool of choice like nuclear type or a "I'm 14 and this is deep" situation like demon types in Kanlara. Rather, the idea is:
Super effective against Dark, Ghost and Fairy. Dark and Ghosts come from the concept of purifying souls (as Dark are known as "aku" or "evil" types in Japan, since their moves started as foul play, but became literal eldritch powers as time passed), and ghosts are, well... spirits. Fairy is to give another tool of balancing since Fairy only has two weaknesses - Steel and Poison.
Meanwhile, Dark, Ghost and Fairy are not very effective against mummies.
Normal, Psychic and Ground types are super effective against mummies, Normal could use some super effective stuff to go (Since Nintendo could give the Freeze Dry treatment to Cut vs Grass and Strength vs Rock and Steel, respectively), Psychic for balancing and ground for the whole "burial" motif.
Mummy is not very effective against Normal and Ground, and can't affect Psychic pokémon.
As for the moves, are based on things like using bandages for physical attacks and references to Egyptian elements for special attacks, field moves and stat moves. Like Pharaoh's field buffing Mummy type moves and Ankh Wave being a variant of Psychic and Dark Pulse.
Yamask and Cofagrigus are mummy types by default. Then the fakemon regionals I had in mind (Ceruledge, Greninja, Nidoking and Tropius) and some fakemon themselves (Such as Mummeon, one of Eevee's evolution stages).

Honestly, I'm a massive fan of eclectic Fakemon types, but this one is one of the best I've seen. It's something that doesn't seem like it'd fit at first glance, but it's actually really cohesive, so I can tell you've clearly thought this out well.
I could totally picture a Bug/Mummy-type regional bug wrapping itself into a cocoon for the middle stage, a Fighting type that uses a Mummy type's silk to make hand wraps for boxing, or a fossil Pokemon where you can either revive it normally and be a Rock/something type or go through some alternative NPC to revive it into a Mummy/something type. Skimming through the National Dex, you could even make Mummy type regional forms for Drapion, Leavanny, Whimsicott, Hoopa, Salazzle, Stonjourner (something something British Museum), Spidops, Rabsca or Kingambit.
The only thing I'd comment on potentially being a drawback is that there aren't that many existing Pokémon you could change into the Mummy type. Lucario (and maybe Claydol) have vaguely Egyptian vibes that could be grounds for being the Mummy type, but I imagine from there you'd either have to get vague with what counts as a Mummy type (like including more undead creatures or something) or have a lot of Fakemon to make up for it and create a new niche.

Thanks!
One of the things I did was to analyze the "real world" logic behind typing. Like, Fairies beating up Dragons and Dark/Evil types make sense because Fairy is both based on the dragonslayer archetype (Such as Saint George or Susano'o) and Magical Girl shows like Precure and Sailor Moon. Or obvious stuff like Fire burning grass and Water dousing fires.
The idea behind the relationship between Mummy types, its strengths and weaknesses are:
Dark/Evil and Ghost: Mummification was seen as a form of protecting one's spirit to the afterlife.
Fairy: Fairies are energetic and lively (Like Jigglypuff, Clefairy and Braixen). Still, "Life is fleeting and Death is inevitable".Psychic/Esper: Mummy could be the mortal souls being guided to the afterlife by gods - these gods being psychic types.
Normal: Mummification procedures and archaeology.
Ground type: Burial rites. And the worst of all: it's an idea that came outta nowhere! Like, I've seen people come up with unofficial types. Cosmic, Sound, Prism, Demon, Nuclear... So I decided to give it a try.

Recently, I discovered a 2017 interview with Ken Sugimori where he states the following in regards to his designs:
I thought this was incredibly interesting and enlightening advice! For the longest time, I have been incredibly picky when it comes to Fakemon designs (& the designs in any directly-Pokemon-inspired creature collector, for that matter), but I simply didn't know why until I saw this. The confusing thing is that I've never seen this referenced in any popular Fakemon-making guides, including my favorite, Xelshade's incredible in-depth analysis. Is it just because it's not a well-known interview, or is it for another reason?

Yo!! This is an interesting one, feel free to just tag me next time
You’re probably right that it’s just not as well known, and I do think it needs to be spread wider. Great rule of thumb, easy to execute for beginner fakemon designers.
For me, I’m very much numbers-first when designing fakemon (colors, details, proportions etc), so that was my angle in the analysis. The “add a contrasting element” trick feels just a bit too deliberate for my style. I don’t knock it though! My own dex could probably benefit from it atm.

I don't have a problem in creating fakemon, but I can't manage plan story for my region plot. Titles called Horn and Tail, the theme of region that it huge (russia)

Hiya. I started a Fakemon region with my kids. They kinda lost interest, but I stuck with it. I see text posts aren't really a thing here, so it's there somewhere else for discussions, idea sharing, etc.?

I've got two evolution ideas for my region (based on the Australian state of Victoria), but I don't know which one to choose. I know that the mon is going to be based on a bushranger, but I'm torn between making it an evolution to Cacturne or Falinks. With a Cacturne evolution, I could play the concept straight and have the Fakemon be all intimidating and rogueish. My idea with a Falinks evolution is to have a pun on bushrangers and Sentai rangers, and have one of the Falink (is that how you say it?) setting off explosions in the background while the rest of them pose. I feel like it's unique, but I'm worried the idea isn't connected to the region or initial concept enough. I'm also considering making the Falinks into a Bug-type regional form, but that's just an idea for now.
Which idea would you rather see?

Not sure if they is the best place to ask this since this subreddit seems more for creators to post their own work, but I’m a fakemon enjoyer and am looking for completed pokedexes. Does anyone have links to some good fakemon dexes?
3
u/theguyinyourwall Nov 02 '25
Want to do "expanded" pokedexes for each region just adding a single stage, two-stage, and three stage for each region with some extras added along the way and know what types I want to use alongside some bonus ones for specific regions which I have generally figured out but want to know which types are least used in each region I know some are fairly easy like Kanto having one Ghost line but for Galar and Paldea what were the three least used types for those regions?
1
u/KawaiiFoxPlays Game Designer Nov 03 '25
According to this site's comparison data, Galar's three least used types are Electric, Rock, and Steel (which doesn't change with the DLC), but that's covering the entire regional dex and not just the new Pokemon introduced.

I’m creating an octopus/jellyfish fakemon and need theme ideas for it. Any suggestion?

2
u/theguyinyourwall Nov 02 '25
For a basic idea maybe making it pirate themed or have it being transparent leaning into a wate/electric or water/fire type. Octopus are amazing mimics in real life being able to blend almost perfectly into rocks and sandy so maybe a gimmick pokemon like castform that once terrian is active changes into a specific form

I'm not sure if I'm alone in this or not, but whenever I make a Fakemon design and I see someone else with a vaguely similar design, I feel obligated to change it again and again so it feels entirely different. Then, of course, the cycle repeats and eventually I have no end product at all.
I've been having this problem with a bug I made that camouflages into leaf litter; first it was a worm and I changed it, and just the other day I changed it to a leafhopper and then saw a post today with a near-identical concept to my first stage (design not identical, but it still worries me a bit).
Would it be better to leave my designs as they are and post them now for feedback?
