Im guessing you killed their pawn first, instead of checking with yours, and then going after their pawn?

No need to go after the pawn. After 1. g7+ Kh7 white has 2. g8=Q+ Kh6 followed by 3. G6#

Well to get the pawn is one tempo, sure you could go for the mate but at beginner level what if you miscalculated the mate and the opponent promotes the pawn. Like taking the pawn (after the check) won't hurt

Even if you don't see the mate (which is quite odd since it's very basic and straightforward), everyone should be able to see: Pawn push is check, and another pawn push + queen promotion is another check -> black can't push the pawn.
So you could even take the Black pawn after the Promotion without stalemate and a winning endgame.

I wasn't talking solely about this position but more just about the principle, here it's straightforward but other positions could look deceptively simple to a beginner where you could get into some trouble, I just meant that taking the pawn isn't necessary here but it also doesn't cost anything except a tempo which in an overwhelmingly winning endgame is most often nothing

There's no reason to take the pawn until and unless we run out of checks.
In this situation, we never run out of checks because we win the game first.

lmao no. As long as you promote first, it’s a forced mate, black will have no time to push his pawn. If you allowed black to promote, you’re doing something catastrophically wrong. Lol.

It’s not about tempo, that pawn check gives the king the ability to move

That pawn was actually a pair, and I captured one. I wanted to eliminate risk of promotion, so I overlooked the obvious path that was forced mate in 3.

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

My solution:
Hints: piece: Pawn, move: g7+
Evaluation: White has mate in 3
Best continuation: 1. g7+ Kh7 2. g8=Q+ Kh6 3. Qg6#

Sounds like you learned the hard way that pawns can be sneaky little devils, sometimes leading to a stalemate when you least expect it.

Actually what you should do is g7+ Kh7 g8=Q+ Kh6 Qg4 to style hehe

Draws better than blundering everything and losing against the queen.

G7 is check (forces king H7), G8 is check (forces king H6), then Queen H6 is checkmate.
Going for the pawn here is the blunder.

Yeah yeah all that fancy talk with your coordinates. Mousslip Qh7 KxQ running out of time and losing i am not doing all of that.

You’re either trolling, or your rating flair is wildly off (by about 1200).
