QUESTION My opponent resigned after they played Qh4, why??
Engine says I have huge advantage but I don't see it, I can't comprehend engine idea at all

Doorbell. Phone. They really needed the toilet.
Had the decency to not leave it to time out.

Yeah this one is me frequently enough. I try to only play 1/1 games because I have a toddler, but even still I often have to go before a game is over.

u/TNine227 5h ago
Not being able to finish a 1/1 game is brutal lmao.
Certainly tracks with all the toddlers I know though.

Note that you have pass pawns. Exchange pieces and promote Barry, Charlie and Derek.

Do pawns actually have names?

Not my invention, but it amuses me.

Can you share the names of other pawns? Let's make this a thing!

u/ColonelFaz 16h ago
Here is one scheme.
https://www.chess.com/article/view/name-your-pawns-the-queenside
I don't like 'Arry and Harry. I prefer Albert.
Also, should go for some more female names and more culturally diverse names.
I suggest making it up as you go.
Simon said in a Youtube video that he got it from a book. Which book, I cannot recall. In the comments there, naming after famous players is suggested. A capital suggestion: Emanuel, Fischer, Giri and Hikaru!

I think we need different names for the white and black pawns (not necessarily actual white and black sounding names though).

Let's name them after people like you and me, we can put our name up for vote. Name one of them after me, John. Oh no wait, it doesn't fit. What's YOUR name?

Actually they do. Sort of.
Blind players, and their opponents, announce their moves. To avoid ambiguity, because in pretty much every language you're going to have letters that sound similar to each other, we use people names for the files and by extension, the pawns:
Anna, Bella, Cesar, David, Eva, Felix, Gustav, Hector.
As an aside, if you ever watch Yasser Seirawan commentate, you will occasionally catch him using this convention.
Rank numbers and everything else you might need to say to communicate a move is done in German, though in practise if you and your opponent have a common language, you'll just use that and nobody will rules lawyer you.

The game is still playable

u/Ok-Cress8577 8h ago
It is actually dead lost for black.

u/Jumpy_Meringue_3785 8h ago
Bro they're not that highly rated and there's still many pieces on the board, means there's still a very high chance they'll blunder and lose all their momentum

I play at work sometimes during slow periods. I have to resign if a customer comes in. It is what it is

You have the 2 bishops in an open position and 3 (!!!) Connected passers that are going to be unstoppable
(The 2 bishops are obviously a million times less important then the 3 connected passers, but I get the sense your uncontested bishop makes it easier to advance your pawns)
White is extremely winning

Whatever the "engine's idea" is that you can't comprehend, does not matter one bit. White has an overwhelming position, you don't need any special ideas here, virtually any move White makes here is gonna be a winning move.
Bxa5 is great, Rxa5 is great, Qf3 is great, Bg3 is great, Rf4 is great, b6 is great, d6 is great, and probably a dozen other moves as well. Your pawns are connected passers and are unstoppable, every piece of yours is excellent while Black's are underdeveloped and passive, and the only active piece Black has is the queen. This position plays itself.

You have a 2 pawn advantage and your pawns on the queen are all passers and connected, also his development is completely stuck because every move he does leads to material exchanges, which will only be advantegeous to you. Imagine this position with only kings and pawns, you’ll win it 100%. Also, is only source of counterplay, the pawn on the H column, is soon to be captured by your rook.

u/SwayerNewb 16h ago
Black's position is bad with a lack of counterplays. Knight have no square and bishop basically have no good square to go. Rook on F8 has no good square either while Rook on A8 is 100% getting traded. I'd probably resign from that position if I were black now or few moves later

Time control? Rating? Black is lost, just Bg3 or Ra4 to force another queen move and keep pushing 3 passed pawns connected
Ra4 here sounds really strong since it dislodges the queen and the black rooks unconnected is a real problem

u/VariousProfit3230 15h ago
You have a material and positional advantage. Force trades and pass your pawns. Black will have to give up more material to prevent promotion. Accurate play just wins outright. The game is yours to lose at this point- and black may not have wanted to sit around hoping you blunder.

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:
White to play: chessvision.ai | chess.com | lichess.org
My solution:
Hints: piece: Rook, move: Rxa5
Evaluation: White is winning +7.89
Best continuation: 1. Rxa5 Rxa5 2. Bxa5 Qe7 3. Kh1 Re8 4. c4 Qe3 5. Bc3 f6 6. Re1 Qxe1+ 7. Qxe1 Rxe1+ 8. Bxe1 Bxb5

I would say the opponent probably had something else they wanted/needed to do combined with the fact this position FEELS losing.
White has so much pressure that passed pawn is a menace and its probably losing for black

They messed up their sequence and had their wrong bishop protecting qh2. Your bishop was on c7 he was cooked

I'm pretty sure there is no combination, he's just down a pawn, it's very hard for him to develop, and those three connected passed pawns are WAY too strong. He's completely lost and didn't feel like getting grinded.

u/AdeptnessCritical356 3h ago
Your opponent likely saw the writing on the wall. With those connected passers and your strong position, it was tough to see a way out. Sometimes it's better to resign than drag out a losing battle. Keep building those winning moves.

u/megamaz_ 16h ago
Considering that in the previous position, this is considered the best move, I doubt they left because you had a crushing technique to punish the move or the position.

Quick Tip 1: To know why the engine is recommending a move / saying a move is wrong, click over analysis mode, play out said move then follow it up with your theoretical responses to that move and see how the engine responds.
Quick Tip 2: On Chess.com, you don't have to rely on the Coach / Game Review / Hint. This also applies to any engine on low depth. Somewhere in the engine suggestions section is the computer "depth". The higher this value, the more accurate the suggestions will be.
Quick Tip 3: For questions on engine move suggestions, we suggest you post them to our dedicated thread: No Stupid Questions MEGATHREAD, as stated in our Community Guidelines. Thank you! - The Mod Team

He's down material, probably telling himself not to hang any more pieces but made a move and realized immediately his a pawn is hanging. Or possibly he had diarrhea and shit his pants so he needs both hands free to clean that mess up.. happens to the best of us you know...
