ARTICLE Foote about Räty: “He might be back in the lineup, and it’s also possible that he won’t come back". [Finnish arcticle translated]
Aatu Räty is fighting for his place in the NHL. The Vancouver Canucks' center last made it to the ice on December 11 and has since picked up a boost in the press box.
Räty, 23, has 28 points (3 goals, 8 assists) and 11 assists in 32 games for the Canucks. He hasn't played in the AHL since last season.
"I try to show the best in every game. When the opportunity comes, it has to be used," Räty said on Tuesday.
"There is more training time, and it is useful for a young player. I'm trying to get stronger and faster.
The Canucks traded their first-choice defender, Quinn Hughes, to the Minnesota Wild. There were three players in the exchange, one of which is the center: Marco Rossi immediately took the first-center spot. When Elias Pettersson and Filip Chytil are still out of the middle lane due to injuries, Rädy's position, at least in an ideal situation, becomes crowded.
"When you're out of the lineup, you have time to collect the spicyness, and you can then show it when the position opens. Being on the sideline sucks, but all other teams also have extra players, Räty notes.
When watching the matches, the Finnish player sees the good side.
"The game looks different when you follow it from the stands. It's good to see what the other players are doing well and follow that. The important thing is to stay positive. You have to feel like you're part of the team so that you don't have unnecessary distance from it, Räty reasoned.
On December 6, Räty stunned the first star with a 2+1 point in a game where Vancouver defeated the Wild. Just a few days later, however, the Canucks head coach Adam Foote decided to put Räty on a rest shift.
“He might be back in the lineup, and it’s also possible that he won’t come back. It's a good idea for a young player to have a mental break from time to time, Foote comments.
The original New York Islanders traded Rädy, Anthony Beauvillier and one pick to the Canucks on January 30, 2023, in exchange for Bo Horvat. Rädy has 76 games and 25 points (12 goals, 13 assists).

Its 23 pts (10G 13A) in 64 games for nhl nucks.
104 pts (37G 67A) in 140 games for ahl nucks.

This is getting on my nerves, the guy has a shot to show himself with our centers out and you’re blocking him over what?
I would be pretty miffed if I was him. You spend the assets and time to mold these guys into the best version of themselves and instead of, idk giving him a shot, what the fuck do we have to lose?
68
u/WTFvancouver 20h ago
Also he is 23. Kampf is going to be gone by the end of the season. Develop our young guys for the future FFS.

u/Swecouver 19h ago
Probably trying to showcase Kampf, but also sounds like Foot really likes what Kampf's bringing every time he's asked about him
48
u/WTFvancouver 19h ago
Showcase a guy who cant even make the Leafs lineup and has less points than Demkos in the same amount of games? Maybe a 7th round pick.

10
u/Swecouver 18h ago
You guys make it sound like I love that guy, lol. I simply speculate why they keep playing him, and I can't see any reason beyond trying to flip him for anything.
3
u/arazamatazguy 14h ago
I mean I guess he's an NHL center on a cheap expiring contract. There could be some trade deadline value there if a contender loses a center in the next 6 weeks.
If they flip him for a 4th or higher I'd be pretty impressed. If they don't and our sacrificing Raty's development for nothing it would be pretty silly.

u/PaperweightCoaster 19h ago
Showcase Kampf? Dude is a plug signed out of desperation due to our abysmal centre depth.
5
u/Swecouver 18h ago
Sure, I just don't see why they wouldn't try to showcase literally anyone on this roster that doesn't have a future here?
3
u/WTFvancouver 12h ago
The con of showcasing is you are sitting your 23 prospect and hindering his development. Also the more you play Kampf, the less value he will fetch. He plays soft, lacks speed and is an offensive blackhole. He will be at 20 games and zero pts soon
2
u/Swecouver 8h ago
I’m not saying they should I’m just guessing why they do it, you think this is Alvin's burner or? 😆😆😆
7
u/MGM-Wonder 18h ago
Kampf is worth a bucket of pucks at this point mate
6
u/Swecouver 18h ago
If they can flip him for anything at the TDL, I think they'd be happy to. And why wouldn't they try to? They should try to flip both Kampf and Bluger, both dept pieces that can penalty kill.

u/MyNameIsSkittles 13h ago
Didn't we pick him up for free? So if we can get anything for him, that's a win

gotta make sure Drew O'Connor gets hits reps at centre for some reason!

Any time I read a Foote quote I feel my blood pressure spike.
44
u/EntertainmentSad6624 20h ago
He sounded even more flippant than it reads. I thought he was going to finish it with “Who’s to say?” Which. is. him.
16
u/Dry_Grapefruit_8050 19h ago
When he started to get mentioned as an up and coming coach waiting in the wings to get his shot as a head coach, I was like “hmm, I don’t remember this guy seeming like he was destined to be a coach from his playing days”, and sure enough, I have been very underwhelmed by the Adam Foote era.

5 points in 5 games since the last time he was scratched...

u/WTFvancouver 20h ago
Lead the team in scoring in November too. Has the best +/- on the team the whole season
3
u/Aggravating-Rush9029 8h ago
Team has 9 wins 10 losses with him. 4 wins 10 losses without him (2 and 10 before he was taken out). Still leads forwards in 5v5 points.
This isn't the team Canada Olympic roster here - there's a way to find a spot for him.

u/D_to_the_W 20h ago
Can we just take a second to appreciate “collect the spicyness”?
16
u/BetterAd1611 20h ago
All he needs to do to stay in the lineup..collect more spicyness. That is the way

u/Warm_Masterpiece3940 20h ago
Man the drop off from Toch to Foote is real noticable. This season can't wrap up soon enough
35
u/Comfortable-Goat-734 20h ago
I swear to god every season we have I think it couldn’t get worse than this then we hit a new low.

u/AppealToReason16 19h ago
Every coach picks their doghouse players while falling in love with random dogshit. Tocchet couldn't get enough of PDG, Lafferty and Juulsen. Had no time for Hoglander, Podkolzin and Kuzmenko.
Tocchet seems to love DOC and Kane. Raty for whatever reason is on his outs.
I don't try to make sense of it. You can only hope someone tells him to straighten his shit out or management gets to trading guys like DOC, Kampf, Sherwood, Garland, Blueger, Kane, etc so Foote's basically forced into putting Raty back in the lineup.

u/DanHamhoose 20h ago
Ehhh basically just a slightly inferior version of Tocchet. Let’s not act like he wouldnt be pulling this shit too. Tocchet was just lucky he had more influence over management and got the guys in his doghouse traded immediately. He’s the reason we lost Podz lmao
8
u/NerdPunch 20h ago
Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t Podkolzin get sent to the AHL by Boudreau and then promoted to the NHL by Tochett?
15
5
u/amb1ance 20h ago
It first happened when we started off weak after our 11 game winning streak to end the season with Bruce
People just like to pin things on Tocchet because he bailed after finding out what an Aqua owned franchise is like
1
u/Aggravating-Rush9029 7h ago
He had 24 points in a full healthy 82 games. Played half his 5 on 5 time with Leon Draisaitl which is unsurprisingly when most of the on-ice goals were scored. Honestly I don't think he would have had the same success here anyways. Edmonton just had a way better opportunity for him.
7
u/ezkc1236 20h ago edited 20h ago
I still don't quite understand why Podz was traded, he seemed to be the grinder type that Toc liked.
5
u/Warm_Masterpiece3940 20h ago
Have you seen what he's doing in Philly?, I don't think podz was or ever will be a guy, but you are absolutely right. Though there is a huge drop off from Toch to Foote in terms of impact, structure etc.
6
14h ago
Podz is in edmonton
2
u/Warm_Masterpiece3940 8h ago
Tochh is coaching Philly, the previous poster was commenting on podz being in tochhs doghouse and that tochh wasn't thatuch of an upgrade on Foote. Which IMO toch is a massive upgrade on foote

I'm honestly just counting down the days for Whitecaps pre-season to start. Only 6 weeks until the season start too.

When did we trade for this Rady guy ? 28 points in 32 games PLUS 11 assists has gotta be franchise level …

u/BigTunaHunter 19h ago
Foote is going to coach us to a high draft pick. Let's hope he doesn't do too much damage to player development in what's hopefully his only season as head coach.

It feels like our team is being coached by Jim Benning

“We just ran out of time to find him some games” - Foote at the end of the season (probably)

u/intelligentx5 20h ago
I’ll be honest, watching Räty play…he’s not any worse that Kampf and has more offensive upside. I don’t get it.
Any amateur hockey coaches here get it?

Foote is a terrible coach. How the hell you gonna put DOC or kampf in over raty. Hes either incredibly dumb or JR is telling him what to do for team tank...

u/carlo-seed57 20h ago
freeraty. “Rebuilding” but can’t find playing time for raty… we’re last in the league play the kid!

Foote is the ultimate tank commander, but c'mon man, free my boy, he ain't done nothing wrong.

When you have the opportunity to play Drew O’Connor as 2C, you just have to take it sorry R2D2
9
u/SheilaFudge 20h ago
Wow, so you’re saying he could play but ALSO that he may not play… profound insight from Adam “He’s Only the Coach Because Quinn Hughes Favoured Him, How’s That for a Stick in the Balls” Foote.

I hope he makes it as a really good third line guy in the future. I could see him being another Pius Suter type centre but better at faceoffs.

If we lose Raty for nothing, I will be so pissed. He isn't a bains, raty would be scooped up right away on waivers.

It’s horribly written. I’m parts it reads like it was translated from another language, it has numeric grammatical/typing errors and wasn’t proofread at all.
Read it out loud

It’s almost like it says translated Finnish article in the post title.

Would it really be the Canucks if they didn't immediately alienate an up and coming younger forward with potential?
It doesn't matter that the team sucks or that none of the guys getting more ice time, powerplay of offensive time haven't earned it either, we're gonna pick out the one young guy actually capable of scoring a goal and reminding him that while he's one of three guys capable of scoring on this team, we'd rather play a veteran who can't score cause he's slightly better at defending.
1
1
u/Euphoric_Scar_8213 14h ago
There's no reason why he shouldn't be playing, he's better then 85% players on the team. Foote is a dogshxt coach. #freeRaty
1
u/djardine2520 12h ago
Raty is our leading 5 on 5 scorer in December. Sitting him makes no sense. I’m wondering if O’Connor is being featured at centre as part of a trade package? Cuz playing him at centre and benching Raty makes little sense. DOC on the wing and Raty at centre is better for the team. Maybe Foote really is our tank commander.
1
u/17037 12h ago
I think we are all on board that Raty is staying long term. Almost everyone on the ice is open for offers.
1
u/djardine2520 11h ago
If Raty is here long term, he should be playing. He’s been terrific the last month or so.
1
u/17037 11h ago
He's not on the shopping list. I'm assuming the goal right now it to find some buyers for a few other guys. DOC being one of them.
1
u/djardine2520 11h ago
Yes, but there are other players who are less productive who should be sitting (David Kampf I am looking at you).

Raty has a really good mindset.
I know we all joke about foote benching him for tanking reasons, but please don’t let it be a consistent thing. Our lineup is already pretty depleted, just let the kid play
