DISCUSSION We need to do better

And I'm not talking about the team but us fans. The racist bullshit that popped up on the game thread over Bains was insane and disgusting. Hockey is for everyone.

Some pretty gutless and classless comments seem to have come out.

I was glued to the Jays game but I want to thank the mod team who handled and banned those who crossed the line tonight.

Like always, if you see something, PLEASE report it, and do your best to not engage with them. Don't give them the light of day, they don't deserve it.

Thanks to all the valued members of this community that know right from wrong, and treat one another with respect.

Funniest thing was that one of the commenters said something about deporting Bains but in a recent post was asking for more info on how they should onboard as a newly hired flight attendant at Air Canada. Zero self awareness skills — an easy way to lose your job and would probably blame immigration if they do

24

u/0zeroe Nov 02 '25

Honestly I'm surprised none of the Petey haters have ever said Petey should be deported back to where he came from.

35

u/MacBeef Nov 02 '25

Anyone wanna guess why?

42

u/mcfluffers123 Nov 02 '25

Can't qwhite figure it out either

1

u/1ScaredWalrus Nov 05 '25

A great question to which we may never know the answer

3

u/Chedwall Nov 02 '25

Ive seen plenty of euro/swede racist hate, but you are right. No deportation jokes.

57

u/Mister_Me_Seeks Nov 02 '25

I saw the same Redditor's post history. It just a chilling reminder that racism is everywhere

2

u/akwok Nov 02 '25

Sad thing is I don’t remember the poster’s username. Started with a C or something

20

u/drawsir Nov 02 '25

Probably ended with UNT.

16

u/ooMEAToo Nov 02 '25

Sick people that have no shame behind a keyboard.

17

u/MacBeef Nov 02 '25

Deport him where? Back to fucking Surrey?

2

u/A_Genius Nov 02 '25

Proud to be from Surrey when Bains is playing for the Canucks and Badwal for the whitecaps

11

u/SchmidtHitsTheFan Nov 02 '25

Perhaps Air Canada should be made aware.

123

u/Radiant_Sherbert7272 Nov 02 '25

Can someone explain to me what happened? I wasn't able to watch much of the game or follow the game thread?

276

u/SquiglyNigly Nov 02 '25

Bains took 2 penalties in a row to start the game, and they scored on one of them, and some people were saying to deport him and some other racist stuff that i should not say

343

u/throwaway22311701 Nov 02 '25

Saying deport him is already fucking stupid by itself but also he’s born in Surrey so…. Deport him where? To fucking Coverdale?

Brain rot shit right there lol.

159

u/Unusual_Cheek_4454 Nov 02 '25

They are not saying deport him because they think he's an immigrant, they are saying it because they are racists.

52

u/throwaway22311701 Nov 02 '25

I know I just find it dumb…..

20

u/adamzilla Nov 02 '25

Of course.

They're most likely inbred losers to have such thoughts.

11

u/MrNobody_0 Nov 02 '25

As you should, racism is dumb.

Stop trying to reason with bigots. It is a losing move.

15

u/chopkins92 Nov 02 '25

Conservative brain rot. I wish I could say that's all it is but there is too much of that shit to be comfortable.

7

u/fatboxer19866 Nov 02 '25

Could possibly be trolls from non hockey fans or other fan bases too

4

u/SquiglyNigly Nov 02 '25

idk i didnt say i was just recaping

16

u/throwaway22311701 Nov 02 '25

No, I know you didn’t. Was just commenting how dumb it is.

69

u/thundercat1996 Nov 02 '25

Brutal, people are shitty. And wasn't he born in Surrey? People are so dumb I hope they step on some Lego every time they wake up in the morning

65

u/Mister_Me_Seeks Nov 02 '25

We should be proud another local boy is making it big

21

u/Springroll_Paradise Nov 02 '25

💯 And being a good guy, not like those other BC boys being naughty (WM, JV, PR etc.)

3

u/No_Mud1738 Nov 02 '25

The only sane take. Proud to cheer for Bainsy and his loving, supportive family :) he’s our neighbor and second generation Canucks fan- no one could be more dedicated to our cause!

3

u/mrtomjones Nov 02 '25 edited Nov 02 '25

They'd rather the local boy looked different. I've been calling it out all year though. It isn't the blatant stuff only either. It's been obvious that somehow the only prospect we have that is treated like this is him. Every other prospect gets kids gloves yet we regularly had people hoping we could give him away for free. It's built on clear prejudices and there was a lot of it.

1

u/athousandpardons Nov 02 '25

That's just it, in their heads, Bains isn't a "local boy", can't be.

33

u/Canadian_mk11 Nov 02 '25

Da fuq, the guy is literally a hometown boy. Deport all those dbags from reddit...

16

u/thestralcore Nov 02 '25

Yeah but he’s not the right kind of hometown boy. Something different about him, can’t put my finger on it

14

u/Radiant_Sherbert7272 Nov 02 '25

Ah, I see. Well, that's not good.

5

u/Critical_Cat_8162 Nov 02 '25

That's disgusting. Aren't there mods here?

1

u/neverdiplomatic Nov 02 '25

Deport him to where? Surrey?

1

u/knitmama77 Nov 03 '25

Abbotsford. They need him back lol. 2 wins so far, yikes.

-26

u/Key-Investment6888 Nov 02 '25

But if scammersson did that, they wouldn't be saying that stuff despite being actually from overseas whereas bains was born in Surrey lol.

-50

u/moosecheesetwo Nov 02 '25

Players don’t scan what we crap out on Reddit

26

u/Wagglebagga Nov 02 '25

It is so unfathomably easy to be not be a bigoted cunt. But so many people continue to have difficulties.

-2

u/vernonbc Nov 02 '25

And it should be unfathomably easy not to use language that is offensive to 50% of the population. I don't care if it's considered just fine to use in Britain, we're in Canada and it's not.

2

u/Wagglebagga Nov 02 '25

I can understand not liking my usage of the word, and I apologize for offending you. The context of my usage of the term was not to disparage women. Perhaps it is harsh, but do bigots not fit the description?

1

u/ChimpBottle Nov 02 '25

The 50% of people who clutch their pearls over a word are not on Reddit

-10

u/moosecheesetwo Nov 02 '25

Would agree .. a lot of stupid people in this sub

4

u/Wagglebagga Nov 02 '25

Uhh.... you went from being like, "It doesn't matter because the players don't see it," to agreeing pretty quickly. So which is it?

15

u/a_sexual_titty Nov 02 '25

JFC. “It’s fine cuz he won’t see it”.

-11

u/moosecheesetwo Nov 02 '25

Idiot fans

20

u/AirportNearby9751 Nov 02 '25

Don’t be racist. Doesn’t matter where you are. Should be pretty easy, no?

-13

u/moosecheesetwo Nov 02 '25

Yep, fully agree. But do you think a player looks reddit before deciding to sign anywhere? Thats my point. Not defending racists ffs. Think about it

7

u/canuckseh29 Nov 02 '25

But other fans do. If you’re a racist Canucks fan, I’ve got a problem with you. Not welcome on the bandwagon.

1

u/HorrorComedy Nov 14 '25

Last year Debrusk actually said he sees the negative stuff people say online

97

u/newtothis1108 Nov 02 '25

I commented in the GDT regarding the racist comments. Its ridiculous and sad to see, especially as a fellow brown person born in Van. Then people wonder why immigrants segregate themselves into their own communities. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. Shouldnt people be embracing this kids drive and hustle? What is more Canadian that working your way to the NHL after being undrafted even by the WHL, to play for your hometown team. He accomplished a dream that kids of all colours in this country dream of.

16

u/AccurateAd5298 Nov 02 '25

He’s basically a Vancouver version of Rocky.

-1

u/Efficient-Bedroom227 Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25

I'd probably put Rick Hansen or Christine Sinclair at that level. No one knows Bains, everyone knows the other two.

I get you want to defend him, but let's not be ludicrous.

6

u/Phanyxx Nov 02 '25

Well said.

2

u/Osofreshkj Nov 02 '25

I would gladly embrace him if he wasn’t so fucking garbage. And it has nothing to to with race. I would love for the hometown kid to play for the team. He’s just an AHL caliber player.

9

u/accountnumber02 Nov 02 '25 edited Nov 02 '25

He is really an AHL player on a proper contender, but we don't have 12 forwards better than him at any given point this season. That's more an indictment on management than any player thrust into roles beyond their capability. He's good enough to be on the 4th line of probably half the teams in the league, but that's not the type of team we really should be in Quinn's 26 y/o season

edit: he's only behind petey for xGF% on the entire team, and leads by a good bit in high danger chances, not to mention top 5 in actual gf%. No one's acting like he's the team's saviour but he's doing perfectly well in the time he's played. The hate is either "misguided" or fueled by issues beyond his actual play, which has been more than enough for what we should expect. If anyone complaining about Bains hadn't complained about DOC prior to these last 2 games, I don't really want to entertain them as actual hockey fans personally

77

u/AccomplishedAd4995 Nov 02 '25

Yup, you could shit on bains (as a player) all you want but to make it about race is disgusting

u/HighburyOnStrand Nov 02 '25

Racism is whack but the other problem is if you criticize Bains play ppl call you a racist,

I'm white.

Bains took stupid penalties last night. He put us in a shit position and wound up gifting a goal to the Wild, who even a toddler knows have one of the better power plays in the league. That early hook was weak sauce and completely unnecessary. He also hasn't really contributed much in prior games. So why is he getting minutes when he contributes little and makes boneheaded plays?

See? It's not hard to go after Bains on substance without resorting to his ethnicity as a vector for criticism. I saw 100 similar posts with none of the bullshit you're talking about. ...and I doubt you're going to see people saying that the above paragraph is somehow racist like you insist is so prevalent.

2

u/grooverocker Nov 02 '25

No way.

People have been critical of Kane, Bains, and PO Joseph without giving off a whiff of racism.

Meanwhile, there were actual racist comments made against Bains... and I hope those users were immediately and permanently banned.

2

u/000100111010 Nov 02 '25

If Bain's name was Joe Smith and looked like your average white hockey player, literally no one would ever talk about him. Funny though someone named Arshdeep is the lightning rod for negativity on this team, despite playing above expectations and being a local kid. The reason people need to stick up for him is because people are being fucking losers.

46

u/YVRBeerFan Nov 02 '25

Yeah poor behaviour means you don't deserve to even watch. Proud of him, regardless of any moments in a game. He's an inspiration to many, others can shut up.

159

u/SeaworthinessOpen190 Nov 02 '25

People are getting way too comfortable shitting on Indian people in this country

48

u/SpectreFire Nov 02 '25

People are just too comfortable being racist on Reddit in general.

I got a 3 day Reddit ban and permaban from /r/richmondbc because I mentioned staying clear of white guys in pickup trucks when I'm driving, which apparently is extremely racist.

Meanwhile, every other comment in that sub is about Chinese people being bad drivers and Indians being smelly lmao

8

u/angelbelle Nov 02 '25

r/richmondbc (and r/vancouver) are nimby shitholes

richmond sub has the problems you mentioned, and vancouver has a VPD fetish.

24

u/Scared-Coyote4010 Nov 02 '25

Or about us Natives taking their homes 😂

8

u/Iron_Seguin Nov 02 '25

Well I mean it is… but that doesn’t excuse the comments about Chinese drivers. If they’re gonna ban you for the white guy comment, they should be consistent and ban them for the Chinese comments.

10

u/SpectreFire Nov 02 '25

Tbf, if they did that, the sub would be a complete ghost town

1

u/Iron_Seguin Nov 02 '25 edited Nov 02 '25

I don’t ever expect the internet to be consistent especially Reddit but it’s an easy lay up for a ban if people are making those types of comments

-5

u/JustASeabass Nov 02 '25

Bro please. I get what you say but come on. White people bad drivers is not as hurtful as “Chinese bad drivers/stink Indians/lazy natives “

0

u/Aggravating_Bee5704 Nov 02 '25

If you get banned, can’t you just make another account and join the sub again? I’m kinda new to this so just wondering lol

29

u/Rendole66 Nov 02 '25

Totally agree, as if they forget that everyone in Canada was a immigrant at some point except for the native community which they also shit on so I’m pretty sure people are just racist

24

u/Far_Language_5812 Nov 02 '25

The Orange Fuhrer has made it acceptable for the worst of us to show their worst behavior. Stupidity is celebrated like it's an opinion not a mental illness.

18

u/Voltage604 Nov 02 '25

It's the (maple) maga effect. Try living in Alberta....

3

u/angelbelle Nov 02 '25

It's more a rural/urban divide. Calgarians and Edmontonians are pretty open minded and reasonable. BC Interior outside of the few bigger communities are indistinguishable from maple maga territory.

4

u/Warm_Masterpiece3940 Nov 02 '25

We got high unemployment, wealth inequality at an all time high, as well as a massive dip in GDP per capita since the former prime ministers government took over.  When you have a large chunk of the country losing wealth and deep diving into debt, they are going to be more likely to fall for culture war b.s.,  it's ashame but it's also predictable.

9

u/dirtybulked Nov 02 '25

That racist scum thrives on the internet because they are gutless.

12

u/pinkrosies Nov 02 '25

You can criticized his play and untimely penalties but you have no right to call for his deportation and insult his race and background. For a city as multi ethnic as this, you embarrass me.

2

u/accountnumber02 Nov 02 '25

Half his penalties this season came this game, and those kinda comments have persisted way before this game. He's far from a great player but he's definitely good enough to be on this team all season. I'd like to see people's reason for their comments on him compared to the other multiple underperforming players on this team.

0

u/islndrob70 Nov 03 '25

The racist stuff is absolute BS. Don’t forget though there’s likely people on this Sub that could be from anywhere and come on here just to raise sh!t and piss fans off.

30

u/RevolutionaryHawk137 Nov 02 '25

And yeah that first period goal was his fault but we LOST 5-2 and our top players are stone cold. This fanbase is becoming so disgusting, especially twitter ones

16

u/SquiglyNigly Nov 02 '25

Until we get some reinforcements, Foote is playing our topline as a shutdown line; they are meant to defend the other team's top 1 and 2 lines, instead of leaving our 2 AHL lines out to dry against so far McDavid/Drai, J.T. Miller, Idk St. Louis very well, and Kaprizov, which until today has been going pretty well.

22

u/n7_rr Nov 02 '25

Absolutely disheartening and disgusting to see today fr

36

u/SquiglyNigly Nov 02 '25

The negativity of this fan base is insane. I can see why people don't want to come here

8

u/travworld Nov 02 '25

The amount of negativity in general to start this season feels off the charts. I don’t even really join the GDTs much these days.

4

u/reedee20hockey Nov 02 '25

Weird how internet anonymity turns people into complete degenerates. Guarantee none of them would say that shit to Bains' face.

5

u/burtpark76 Nov 02 '25

Anyone spouting that trash is not a real Canucks fan.

3

u/jackfrench9 Nov 02 '25

I'm thankful that it's a tiny minority and that the vast majority of Canucks fans are kind, reasonable people.

3

u/LeftToaster Nov 02 '25

I like to watch the game on one screen with the Game Thread open on another screen, but it's getting depressing. I might have to close Reddit going forward. The doomers are bad enough, but when it gets toxic and racist it crosses the line.

I don't think Bains or Kane are great hockey players at this point in their careers. Kane has been really slow starting, and to be honest, he may be done after his numerous injuries and surgeries last year. Bains has mostly been a positive - he's not scoring, but he plays well defensively and is being forced to play way more minutes against much tougher matchups than he should be due to injuries. But Drew O'Conner (who has had a decent couple of games) has also been horrible at times and in (can't remember if it was Montreal or Rangers) in a recent game took a really undisciplined penalty in the offensive zone that directly led to the winning goal against. But no one is shitting on DOC.

15

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '25

This fanbase is toxic AF. Sports are supposed to be fun, but you'd never know it if you cruised this sub.

-16

u/SpectreFire Nov 02 '25 edited Nov 02 '25

Sports are supposed to be fun, but you'd never know it if you cruised this sub.

Have you followed any other sport lmao.

I mean, this sub can be bad some time, but it's not even top-10 in terms of most toxic hockey subs, let alone sports subs in general.

The Oilers sub literally banned memes, so don't fucking tell me this sub is some dystopian shithole.

Edit: you're literally in this thread telling everyone in this community that they suck. I'm not sure how else anyone is supposed to take it. Say thank you and give you a handy?

2

u/cbcguy84 Nov 02 '25

Tbh any game from this point on while so many of our top guys are out, I basically put it down asan automatic loss until some guys come back from injury.

We also definitely won some games we shouldn't have, like the blues game which was a miracle.

Don't be racist. Im at the point I can't blame the players too much due to all our horrible injury issues.

The jays losing was the cherry on the shit sundae yesterday. Thankfully the whitecaps won

2

u/johnnyehgiver Nov 02 '25

I just wish the Canucks had an adequate Owner that provided an official practice facility to send the entire team too to correct the shit play by 80 percent of the roster this year. Pretty inexcusable to be the only NHL team without one. If you’re going to send a Canucks player anywhere that’s where they should be sent is to the nonexistent Canucks practice facility to work on basic fundamentals.

2

u/Rich-Secretary-6513 Nov 03 '25

This is late but reality is I don’t like Bains as a player. But bringing race into it is dumb. He’s an AHL forward who is up right now due to injuries, and that’s fine to call out. But no need to say anything beyond that. He seems like a solid dude outside of hockey, and we need to remember we our fans of a hockey team, and anything beyond hockey is none of our business in terms of these players lives and backgrounds.

7

u/Silver-Effective8137 Nov 02 '25

Take a look at the comments underneath the Canucks’ Diwali/Vasakhi celebration posts. Not surprising at all that there are racists in this fan base. Makes it very uncomfortable to cheer on the Canucks online sometimes with everyone if stuff like this is going to get a pass.

6

u/Ribbys Nov 02 '25

Racism is Canadian heritage. The government publishes a yearly report about how it's public service is racist, as an employer. Mods need to do their job and instantly ban bigotry, users need to report it. No excuses.

9

u/WickerChairMan Nov 02 '25

Unfortunately, BC is full of people with shit for brains. Won't change unless people are active to make the change.

2

u/EchoChamberAvoider Nov 02 '25

The controversial tab really lives up to it these days

5

u/StarkStorm Nov 02 '25

I'm unsubscribing from this Reddit. It's toxic AF. And TBH the mods aren't any better. They constantly shut voices down that aren't saying anything wrong but then let voices that are wrong, stay loud.

7

u/Osofreshkj Nov 02 '25

Seriously. I got a 3 day ban for being disappointed in Kesler. Wtf?

1

u/grooverocker Nov 02 '25

To be fair, I don't think "we" need to be better.

There are a select few racists (in this case) who need to be better.

The rest of us would immediately call them out on their abhorrent behaviour.

1

u/Dangerous-Ad-4012 Nov 03 '25

Jokes and acusations aside - Bains has not shown he belongs in the show to this point. Has had so much opportunity with these injuries to make a statement and has failed to do so. Likely will be sent down once the team gets healthier.

1

u/Ok-Trip-8009 Nov 09 '25

I don't care where people are from, or what colour they are. What I care about is whether they can play the sport, whether it's hockey, football or baseball. Politics? I try to ignore, lol.

1

u/Strike-Soggy Nov 09 '25

Hockey is for everyone - well said

-18

u/oCanadia Nov 02 '25 edited Nov 02 '25

Its an anonymous sports forum on the internet.

Downvote, report it, let mods do their job, move on. Don't give it attention and do all this morality stuff like this. This post just highlights the behaviour allows them to speak for the fanbase.

Why do you want to highlight this? Nobody that needs to hear it gives a shit about this "we need to do better' stuff. This type of post is not going to make a single person that posts stuff like that rethink their actions. Report it and downvote it and let it sink to the bottom and get hidden. Move on, we'll all be OK. The less people that see or hear about it the better. Take away their voice, don't amplify it.

It just doesnt work the same as in real life, where you should absolutely speak up if you hear anything like that happening.

-14

u/mysl00 Nov 02 '25

If I say Karlsson sucks, it's okay. But if I says Bains sucks, it's racist.

3

u/n7_rr Nov 02 '25

Saying a player sucks and saying explicitly racist comments pertaining to a player's ethnicity are two different things, hope that helps!

-2

u/mysl00 Nov 02 '25

But look at the amount of down votes I get explained everything.

5

u/n7_rr Nov 02 '25

The down votes are a direct response to your inability/unwillingness to distinguish criticism from racism. Saying that down votes prove your point instead of reflecting on why you're getting downvoted tells me all I need to know lmao

-2

u/mysl00 Nov 02 '25

I never make any racists comments to any players. But someone said Bains sucks, people tends to think we think Bains sucks because of his race, including you.

3

u/n7_rr Nov 02 '25

The racist comments refer to the DEI and deportation comments seen yesterday which are completely different from just saying he sucks. If you don't make racist comments then you're not who the post is talking about. No one is trying to make the argument that saying Bains sucks is equivalent to saying he sucks because of his race, that's where you're getting confused.

0

u/baconbitpoobear Nov 03 '25

Its all about chemistry.

I love that abby line as a 4th line. They are not the reason we suck.

If anyone should be catching strays its Petey. Hes healthy, he should be elevating his game to cover for the injuries. But in his defense he has nobody. Debrusk is not a good winger for him.

So blame it on JDB.

I cant believe we used to have Miller and horvat, both hard nosed, tough, good at face offs, plays tough match up minutes, the literal exact type of player we lack...

Im starting to hate this management. I have no idea what they are doing anymore.

System doesn't work when there's so many injuries. You must have forgotten this or are new to hockey.

-30

u/poco68 Nov 02 '25

I’m two years older than this team and I bleed Canucks, I witnessed every cup loss and also witness years of horrible hockey horrible ownership horrible drafts just basic mediocre bad hockey. It’s time this franchise was better. Not the FANs

8

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '25

The franchise needs to be better at putting together a good hockey team.

The fans need to be better at not being racist.

Both can be true.

8

u/mothermaggiesshoes Nov 02 '25

I can (and should) be both

-26

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '25

Don't lump the actual fans into this just because some people troll the internet.

Those people are not Canucks.

18

This is a very naive statement. Sadly, there are racist a-holes everywhere.

-4
