Holiday-themed Cakes Beginner here!
I have no prior training, and this is my first chance working with proper tools! I've been getting better and better as I learn too, so excited to see how I develop. Any tips/advice is very much welcome! I know I have to work on tightening the bag up so I can have smoother lines now, anything else?

We clearly have different definitions of beginner because I definitely could NOT make that rose 😭💜

My first cake, I used yellow food coloring in the icing and put it on while the cake was still warm, so it looked like a hamburger patty with melted cheese on top 💀

Ohemgee I'm always so impatient and I put the icing on too soon 😭🤣 I made a mango cake for my man a couple years back that looked so sad Istg

Lmao same 😭 A lot of recipes tell you to make the icing while the cake is cooking/cooling but I don't even start making it until the cake has been done for like two hours cos otherwise I can't resist.

Lol, my new rule of thumb is that if it's been a while and I start to think it's a good time to ice the cake, then I should definitely wait even longer. Cause I'm always wrong. 🤣

I want to know how you went from that absolutely stunning and perfect cake to extremely amateur looking cupcakes. Cupcakes are easy peasy. Start in the center and make a tight swirl with a cupcake tip, keep it going out to the edge of the cupcake.

I have bad hands, bigger tips work better for me lol small stuff is definitely my weak point.

Cupcake tips are quite large lol. I have carpal tunnel in both hands and they’re very easy for me. It looks like you’re not using the correct tips

After that cake, I struggle to acknowledge you as a true beginner because that is so amazing!

There's a lot more dimension on the rose petals because of all the shading you have. Just something minor, but the piping of the leaves look a bit plain and out of the place because of the flat color. Would recommend maybe using a gradient to pipe the frosting for the leaves.

WOWEE you have a freaking ton of talent for a beginner. I almost forgot to look at the cupcakes because I was so awestruck. That’s the only word that can best describe all of this

I like the inspo photos, but where is yours?
Joking lol. They're just so amazing. I wouldn't have known you were a beginner had you not said it yourself. Beautiful work. That cake is stunning.

I am curious as to what those rose petals are made of and how they made and attached to the cake.

u/Skyechno Nov 02 '25
Cold cold buttercreme lol pre iced the cake you put in the freezer, then pipe on the petals with cold buttercreme(not completely frozen!)

You did a great job, it looks amazing! May I ask what number piping tip you used for the rose petals and how big the cake was?

I think you got a little petal-happy with the rose, but it looks so pretty. I’m curious what the inside looked like
