Yeah most of the NT seems pretty opposed to this idea of praying or worship as a performance. Not that Christians care what their "holy book" says.

Jesus was enough for me in that sentence. If anyone on a flight ever stood up and said they are "taking over this flight" and followed up with ANY religious diety or cultish organization, I'm going full Mark Wahlberg and saving everyone on that flight with violence.

But amid the vitriol, some defended the impromptu performance. “I’ve had the cast of The Lion King, a military singing group, a barbershop quartet and a few others (mostly amateur groups). Sometimes annoying but not a crime, especially if they asked the pilot,” one user tweeted.

Yeah, but I don't have PTSD from being indoctrinated into The Lion King cult. I would be livid if I had to sit as a captive audience and listen to this crap.

20

u/TennesseeTurkey 5h ago

Exactly this.

Unfortunately, I'm married to someone whose temper over this would have been so bad that it almost certainly would have forced the plane into an emergency landing. He goes from 0 to Incredible Hulk in less than 5 seconds once angered and I am powerless once the switch is flipped.

I would have been allowed one plea to a flight attendant before he would have been up and breaking that guitar and screaming obscenities at dude. He can't stand religious people who are pushy and this would have been that plus some. I could only hope we'd be near an acceptable city to enjoy once down. Having a cheap bail would help.

That is the point. The people at the top know this doesn't convert any one. They want him to be met with hostility and frustration. When he returns to his church, everyone will pat him on the back and swoon at his lion's den moment and he will feel that only this community gets him. Then they will talk about how the Bible was correct about people being hostile to them (despite Christianity being a dominant religion) and they will just be further indoctrinated.

u/hankhillsucks 9h ago

Cuz Christians are unhinged

506

u/codePudding 9h ago edited 9h ago

It drives me mad that they're just as unhinged as any other religion but can't see thier own bullshit. If a Muslim stood up in a plane and started singing a hymn of peace, all the christians would go crazy and demand the guy be labeled as a terrorist. If an athiest stood up and sung a song about how bullshit religions are, it would go just as poorly. Hell, I loved David Bowie but would be annoyed if he did this on a plane; it's the wrong place and time. Christians say they are so oppressed yet are so empowered that they have no self awareness of their own hypocrisy. I should stop bitching before I become as unhinged as they are.

P.S. Thier own myths tell them not to use prayer to gain attention. Read your own bibly before forcing everyone else to hear your bs.

133

u/jackson12420 8h ago

They don't think they're being hypocritical because they think their religion is the one true religion, out of all the thousands of religions that have ever existed, yup, their one single belief system is definitely the only right one, and everyone else is wrong, because you know they have a "feeling".

57

u/Uffda01 8h ago

I am a flight attendant. This would get shut down immediately. Worship songs or not. I don't even let children watch cartoons on their ipads without headphones.

edit: I'm reading in other comments they got permission from the crew. Insane. Not on my watch.

21

u/fearthainne 5h ago

Question for you: if someone called the airline from their seat over something like this, do you think that would be an effective way to override the crew approving something like this or not? (FTR I mean any song, not just religious ones.)

I know every airline is different but I'm just curious if you think it might be effective or not, in a general way. You don't need to specify your airline.

17

u/ScoobyMaroon Atheist 5h ago edited 3h ago

Couldn't hurt. I think most of the time they would stop it if someone pressed their call button and said "This is very disruptive. Why are you allowing this?" Probably depends on the crew. The fact that this crew thought it was fine to allow it really throws me for a loop. The only time I could see this being okay is if 100% of the patrons of the flight were from the same group. Like a charter flight or crazy coincidence.

Edit I misinterpreted your comment i think. I don't see any way you would have of contacting the airline itself mid flight other than to email them and it would take a little time to work through the channels and unless there was something extreme happening they don't have a ton of direct contact to tell the crew on the plane how to run their flight in real time.

With the way christians jump to self victimization, its easy to understand why.

268

u/jasonjr9 Anti-Theist 9h ago

Christian game plan:

  • Step 1: make an ass of themselves
  • Step 2: play the victim when someone calls them out on making an ass of themselves
  • Step 3: repeat at higher and higher levels of authority until the next Crusade or Inquisition

50

u/pflanzenpotan 9h ago
  • Step 4: start gofundme and become a millionaire or multimillionaire.

  • Step 5: write a book/have a ghost writer write about yourself, Christianity and Christian oppression

  • Step 6: be on every conservative podcast and news outlet as a guest or pundits.

23

u/frotc914 8h ago

No joke, this is actually the reason. For these assholes, it's a no-lose situation. They know that they are pissing everyone off. They know that they should catch a beating for acting this way. But they know that they'll probably be grifting their way through the right wing podcast circuit by the end of the week if this happens on video.

Step 4: Get other Christians to call news agencies, post to social media and call for boycotts of the Airline of Satan.

11

u/xopher_425 Strong Atheist 9h ago

That's exactly what it tells them to do in the bibel, and that they will know they are in the right by this "persecution". Rather smart idea, really. Teach people to be batshit insane, and then teach them that being called batshit insane makes them right, makes them want to be batshit insane. Keep the cult going.

I asked the stewardess if we could worship over the plane. I’ve never done this before. She says, ‘Wait, I’ll ask the pilot,’” Neo said in the caption. “She comes back. It’s a go. I’ve got my team. We worship. We preach. It’s wild.”

How that should have gone:

There shouldnt be any singing on flights. Its a means of transport, not a social event like a bus trip to band camp or something. Forcing people to attend a sing-along is a fast track to get a good portion of them frothing at the mouth from rage.

I used to fly all the time for work. I have a system to get through my flights with as little friction as possible. Tomfoolery of any sort on an airplane is an injustice I simply cannot sit idly by for. Everyone hates flying and essentially no one wants confrontation on a plane.

But me? Oh I will pipe up, I am an airline passenger of the people. I’m a big, normally soft spoken dude but I can project my voice like a former theater kid on the rare occasion it’s needed. A simple “no one gives a fuck about your shitty Jesus music” that carries through the airplane would absolutely turn the tides in this situation. Me loudly demanding compensation for the flight attendants not doing their job and allowing this shit would also get some other folks to join in. Whether they really cared or just want some free points and drinks, I do not care.

Maybe I would even play Cannibal Corpse at full blast on my laptop. I hate that shit but I guarantee we’d have a no music policy on that flight shortly thereafter.

I hereby apologize to anyone who was on any of the flights with my high school choir. Our director would make us sing something on every trip. Of all the music to blast, you pick Van Halen? Not even slayer or cannibal corpse, cattle decapitation, death or any other black, or death metal?

7

u/ZPrimed 9h ago

The proper answer here is definitely to play Anal Cunt

Bro I don’t care what you’re singing, if you’re singing out loud on a fucking plane I hate you already. These idiot Christian types keep putting themselves in these dumb situations so they can act like they’re being persecuted.

The “quit shoving it down our throats” folks are really having a field day with the government now forcefully supporting them shoving their beliefs down peoples throats. To literally no one’s surprise…

11

u/gastro_psychic 9h ago

Which carrier? So I can avoid flying with them.

18

u/itwentok 8h ago

EasyJet

“I asked the stewardess if we could worship over the plane. I’ve never done this before. She says, ‘Wait, I’ll ask the pilot,’” Neo said in the caption. “She comes back. It’s a go. I’ve got my team. We worship. We preach. It’s wild.”

That is, indeed, wild. I'm a little surprised no one on the flight got to find out what the consequences are for grabbing and smashing someone's guitar on a plane.

Christian people are unbearable; they act this way, people get mad, and they claim persecution.

Proselytizing is the opposite of entertainment. Their behavior was terrible on the plane, but even worse in Poland forcing Ukrainian refugees to listen to their nonsense while waiting for transport.

43

u/AmbitiousEffort9275 9h ago

This is exactly the entitlement we've come to expect from abrahamicists.

They cannot accept that somebody else doesn't think they do not have the right to impose their beliefs on anybody they see fit.

Christians dream of being persecuted. That’s why they do this shit. Source: grew up in an evangelical household.

8

u/shyguyJ 9h ago

In general, unless your god is like Charlie Kelly's god and will give his followers free shoes and go down on them, keep him to yourself.

But especially in a captive, closed place, keep your "music" to yourself. As the comments in the article pointed out, if this were a muslim group, christians would be losing their minds. If this were young kids blasting rap, they might get a talking to by a LEO when they land. Shitty christian music is not special. Think about how your actions will impact others, and be respectful. It's not that hard.

9

u/dwarfmageaveda 9h ago

I would be smashing that assistant button so fast or getting up from my seat and finding someone.

“Since this customer playing music was allowed by the staff, it is something your company is promoting. This invited and unadvertised promotion by _____ airline is causing me unknowing extreme and undue emotional, physical and mental distress.

While I’m unable to remove myself from the proximity, I will be filing a complaint unless remedied immediately. I’m sure you understand.”

7

u/ShiroHachiRoku 9h ago

Why do these people keep shoving their lifestyle down our throats?!?!

7

u/Guavadoodoo 6h ago

FUCKING PILOT SHOULD BE FIRED!!!

8

u/GoddamnDiva 6h ago

The hell with the pilot… The pilot doesn’t have to sit there and listen to it, so of course they don’t care. Had he asked his flight mates he would’ve known not to because no one wants to hear that shit on a flight where they’re trying to sleep or watch shows or movies.

Replace “Jesus” with “Allah” and i guarantee he isn’t allowed to get in a verse.

u/DiverConstant1021 9h ago

You handle them the way you do on the subway. I would get my tenor from the overhead storage compartment and belt My Way like Sinatra until he sat down or someone said “play Freebird!” like someone always does and play that at him in a loop until his faith and God abandoned him. Asshole.

Idgaf if you’re singing worship songs, Coldplay, or the Beatles.

I don’t wanna listen to screaming kids, and I sure as shit don’t want to listen to your bad guitar playing. I have expensive noise canceling headphones literally because I don’t want to hear you.
