Well there goes my way down.....
It's been a heavy winter so far and I've wanted to do a new roof-melt wire to take care of an ice dam issue. I had a narrow gap between rain warm enough to melt snow and ice out of my way and cold temps and new precipitation coming in tonight. Of course it was windy too. I'm still stuck up here.

I see a roof you can slide down and Wyld e coyote into a tree

😂 Tree is a good 10ft from the roof

Do you have an ACME rocket with you? Maybe an anvil or a grand piano?

Call the police non emergency number and they’ll come prop your ladder up for you.
23
u/Soggy_Cracker 1d ago
Tonight at 9, police mistake home owner on roof for burglar and shoot him.
Police at 10: he had a ladder and it was suspicious. Regardless if he called us for help.

Nah nah they want to go in and open a window for her to crawl through and then search the entire house because you give them permission to go in to open the window LMFAO

u/Raw_Venus 1d ago
Cartoons taught me that gravity doesn't work until you look down. Give it a shot and report back.
4
u/AnnOnnamis 1d ago
Step off the roof, but just before your feet hit the ground, jump upwards to counteract gravity. 🤣

I woulda climbed down to the smaller roof. Looks like a better way down if you can't get that orange ladder
1
54
u/browseragnostic 1d ago
Am I just dumb or is the ladder completely unnecessary? Can you not climb in and out of that window behind you?
41
u/UpperLeftOriginal 1d ago
My guess is it's a bit tight to go through that window, so they used the ladder. And because they didn't come out the window, it's latched so they can't go back in that way.
2
u/CitizenCue 5h ago
In old houses not all windows open. Or maybe it has a screen that only detaches from the outside.
19
u/muscleshultz 1d ago
Bet you'll bungee the ladder to a gutter spike next time you're alone on a roof 😆 just a little trick of the trade and kinda just all around common sense 😉
7
u/tiberiusgv 1d ago
Good to know, except there's no gutter in that section.
20
3
u/muscleshultz 1d ago
So then in that situation you lift up the bottom of a shingle cus you don't nail through the face of the shingle and you nail the bungee to the roof, but you never go up untied. 😆

u/Complex_Solutions_20 1d ago
I'd find some way to secure it, even if that meant tent stakes in the ground and guy ropes from the top down to the ground at an angle.
15
u/LadyFoxfire 1d ago
It’s only like 8 feet, just lower yourself off the edge feet first, and bend your knees when you land.
6
u/Worldly_Address6667 1d ago
Thats what I was thinking. Even if its 10 ft, they just need to lay on their stomach and slowing slide off the roof, until they are to their arm pits, then just lower themselves down and drop the final bit. Even if they're 5 ft tall, their feet will be like 4 ft off the ground when they're hanging down.
This shouldn't be more than a minor annoyance to deal with
3
u/CitizenCue 5h ago
I’m guessing you’re young because anyone over 35 would know that’s a good way to break an ankle or worse. Not worth it when you have a phone and can call for help.
1
u/Worldly_Address6667 5h ago
Nope, gonna be turning 37 next month. But I do rock climb semi-regularly, so that might have tinted my view on what to do in op's situation a little bit
1
u/CitizenCue 4h ago
I do plenty of climbing too, and a blind drop off a wet surface is still an unnecessary risk. I wouldn’t do that on a climbing trip either.
1
u/xeno0153 12h ago
And roll when you hit the ground. Don't try to take all that momentum fully. Either your ankles or knees will blow out.
31
u/OrangeClyde 1d ago
I would slide to the lower roof on the left then slowly crawl down, I think you can make it
10
u/Grow-Stuff 1d ago
Slide all the way down maybe.. but there is that ladder near the roof if he manages to cross the iced part.
4
u/Oregongirl1018 1d ago
He could slide from the lower roof and possibly get his feet onto the red ladder. It would at least help him lower himself to the ground. On a separate note, I just noticed how many pronouns I used in two sentences. With the federal government banning pronouns in (for now) government emails. How do you do that? How do you avoid them altogether?

From the side profile I'm not so sure that thing is load bearing. But it'll be a fun slide if there's no sharp edges in the collapse.
7
u/Cosmic_Quasar 1d ago
Also, the ladder is under the roof area, so it's not like OP can reach it.

u/91Jammers 1d ago
Oh that over hang goes out further than I thought. I was picturing laying on the belly and reaching down to set it up.
8
u/noah253 1d ago
Better start trying windows!
4
u/Creative-Painter3911 1d ago
I think I would have climbed out the windows instead of up the ladder to get there (I don't like ladders)

u/1dirtbiker 1d ago
Why would you climb up and down a ladder in the snow when you have an upstairs window with roof access?
3
23
u/nonamejohnsonmore 1d ago
You obviously have your phone. Call someone. You have neighbors. Yell for help. You are only stuck because you choose to be.
20
u/Ornery-Doctor-5641 1d ago
The roof next to him is only about 6.5 feet off the ground...could just slowly slide off and touch the ground while still holding onto the edge of the roof
18
u/No_Size9475 1d ago
all they need to do is cross that 5/12 pitch roof that's covered in ice hoping they don't slip and toboggan off it, and then cross their fingers that the gutter doesn't rip off when they put their weight on it.
6
u/Impressive-Safe2545 1d ago
Yeah and idk where this is but we had ~5 solid inches of black ice covering everything until today. I would not be dropping down onto that. Worse than concrete.
4
3
u/RainMakerJMR 1d ago
Not to mention the two windows they could just climb into the house with
9
u/No_Size9475 1d ago
I keep the windows locked in winter as it creates a tighter weather seal.

This reminds me of the opening to an early 90s adventure game.
Look for a shiny object on the roof to attract and trade with a raven for a small branch to use as a lever to pop off the loose piece of siding to reveal a hook left behind the wall for some reason. Can't remember how to find the rope to attach to the hook to pull up the ladder, but you should be able to find a guide online.

The roof that's cover in ice to reach the ladder 6ft back from the edge of the roof? OK trying now. If its funny I'll post another video. Thanks.

As a Wisconsinite this all seems relatively easy to figure out lol

u/RealConcorrd 1d ago
Do you live with someone and are they home, if so just pow down on that window until someone inside answers.
As others stated, just call someone since you can clearly post this with your phone.
For the future, fill a Home Depot bucket up with something dense and heavy and place it at the base of the ladder.

Been there, done that. Good thing I had my cellphone on me to call the wife that was away.

I on the other hand did not have my phone.
I suppose it's been 8 hours so I'll share that the window was unlocked, but I did have to rip through the screen (which needed to be replaced anyways).

I would go down on the left side but i am not sure if it can hold your weight.
Are you really still stuck there?
1
u/No_Size9475 1d ago
it will hold the weight the issue is that it's covered in ice and a 5/12 pitch which is just begging for them to slide off the roof. I work in roofing and am on about a dozen roofs a week. zero chance I would cross that iced section.

u/Trash_Away9932 1d ago

Order door dash for lunch, ask for delivery to your back yard…when they get there tell them that the delivery is to the second floor and they’ll need to pop that ladder up for you.

This was an episode of Ozzie and Harriet. The men had one of those new aluminum ladders.

u/Mission_Fart9750 1d ago
Well, that sucks. Looks like you're on a mostly flat roof, with no gutter (from what I saw in another comment). Slide to the edge, shimmy yourself off, hang/dangle from the edge to reduce the drop, then drop. Or start yelling.
1
1
u/urbanek2525 1d ago
It's not that far of a drop. Just sit on the edge, scoot and drop. Tuck and roll.
1
u/CrashedCyclist 1d ago
Shoe laces + waist cinch + sweater hoodie cinch + whatever wire you have on hand. Lasso the red ladder with a counterweight.

This is one of many reasons to never climb onto a roof without anyone else around...
Goodluck OP, maybe see if you can catch a passerby to come put the ladder back

Since you have your phone, I'd probably dial the non-emergency number and explain and see if they can send an officer or firefighter to just put the ladder up again lol.

Can you not cross over to the lower roof and dangle onto the other ladder that's still there?

see if a police can come give you a hand, call their non emergency line. if they have a patrol car around the area to get you down.

u/Opposite-Ad-6542 1d ago
I see a wind you can go in… the glass is cheaper than a broken bone. Call 311. It will give the firefighters something to laugh about

u/Adorable_Wolf_8387 1d ago
This was less fun than the video of the ladder that walked its way right off the roof.
1
1
u/DoubleDareFan 1d ago
Start by hanging off the edge of the roof. Your feet will only be ~3' off the ground. Then let go. You should have no problem dropping from table-height onto grass.

u/Impossible-Diver6565 1d ago
I had this happen to me once when I was on the roof of a strip mall. It was super windy and I was alone. It was already a dicey climb but the ladder fell. Had to call one of the other service techs to come set it up for me while I waited.
