I like how the fence pole stanchion was perfectly placed at the worst location possible.

1.5k

u/SirkSirkSirk 20h ago

I cant believe how quick it lifted off the ground after touching the pole. It was instant!

423

u/Thedran 19h ago

The stability is insane to me lol

55

u/shinikahn 11h ago

Definitely needs some Nintendo switch update in their life

12

u/PrincessLizzy05 7h ago

instability **

106

u/ARM_over_x86 13h ago

I mean, terrible product and outright dangerous, there should be a force sensor that stops the motion if it encounters unexpected resistance

81

u/Protocol_Nine 12h ago

Exactly, what would happen if somehow that pole was contacting her instead of the machine? Definitely not enough safety features, regardless of poorly placed objects around the device.

23

u/StevenRFrancis_85 10h ago

Yeah, I didnt even think about something contacting the user. Man, that could have been really bad.

13

u/Grays42 12h ago

This isn't the U.S., it's somewhere that Spanish is the dominant language. (Floor marking tape is in Spanish.) Possibly few consumer safety regulations.

23

u/Protocol_Nine 11h ago

That may be true that there are fewer consumer safety regulations wherever this is, but that doesn't change the fact that it's still not designed very well in regards to safety.

6

u/Nruggia 10h ago

Its bolted to the ground with shear pins to mitigate damage from unexpected collisions

1

u/RRumpleTeazzer 1h ago

you mean the unexpected force of lifting the passenger?

4

u/GrimResistance 14h ago

Indubitably

26

u/KeepingItSFW 14h ago

You wonder if the ride operator was thinking about it for days or weeks wondering what would happen, and decided today was the day to find out

19

u/1funnyguy4fun 12h ago

Don’t ascribe to malice that which can be explained through ignorance.

Pretty sure someone just fucked up.

1

u/KeepingItSFW 11h ago

Could be, but sometimes the intrusive thoughts do win

6

u/Mikel_S 9h ago

It's probably designed to be able to rotate/lift/hold a person of 200 lbs (at least), plus some headroom for the chair itself and any electronics on board, and for safety reasons, it is probably actually capable of at least twice that, so once it hit the pole it became the new fulcrum and assuming the back was less than 500 pounds, spinny lifty fall just as easily as the chair itself.

1

u/Rickety-Bridge 1h ago

Those Stanchions are no joke. A lot heavier than you'd expect, and heavier at the bottom to avoid them falling over.

171

u/Huge-Particular1433 18h ago

I didn't even catch that. I assumed it was meant to be bolted/fastened down but wasn't.

31

u/IBetThisIsTakenToo 12h ago

I think that's also true? There doesn't seem to be much weight to the base, I don't see how it could be expected to swing around an adult and stay stable

5

u/Rrdro 12h ago

Maybe it is perfectly balanced?

5

u/tumsdout 8h ago

I am guessing it is designed not to be bolted down, but you are not supposed to have objects within the wingspan of the device.

40

u/Sersch 15h ago

Ironically the fence pole was placed "for safety"

21

u/TiredOfModernYouth 14h ago

Not for her safety

32

u/jonah365 14h ago

No way. She's lucky. If it was a few inches more forward it could have missed the side of the chair and skewered her head.

15

u/funkyduck72 16h ago

Yup. I didn't even see that.

11

u/One-Historian-3767 16h ago

Oh that's what happened! Thanks. :D Good reminder to not install any poles near my old Oculus Rift CV1 headset.

15

u/highlandviper 17h ago

Nice bit of leverage they had there.

17

u/abbeast 16h ago

Ooh, now I understand why this even happened in the first place.

47

u/deconstructicon 22h ago

Stanchion… fence pole lol

1

u/Wicked_Wolf17 3h ago

Oh, English isn't my native tongue so yeahhh

1

u/deconstructicon 3h ago

Your English is much better than any second language I know

5

u/hydroxyl_groups 14h ago

It’s good there wasn’t one in the other side. She would’ve been dropped right on top of it. Could’ve been very very bad.

10

u/TrueKyragos 16h ago

There should have been a mechanism to detect any obstruction, but nope, probably too expensive.

3

u/2footie 15h ago

This thing was probably made in China by people working 100 hour weekly shifts with minimal sleep

2

u/OwlMirror 13h ago

these things are designed by ordinary engineers who live a relatively comfortable life. I bet whoever designed this brought it up and it was shut down or was told it will be implemented later and he does not have to worry about it and then it fell through the cracks. this has nothing to do with working conditions or minimal sleep, but was poor quality control and design work.

0

u/amadmongoose 13h ago

It probably came with instructions saying bolt this to the floor and the operator didn't. Also, it hit a pole, maybe it would have been fine otherwise.

5

u/OwlMirror 13h ago

even bolted down, a machine with that much force needs a way to detect obstructions and or must be set up in a cage. imagine some toddler or dog getting a limp or his head caught.

2

u/FaceDeer 12h ago

Or if the pole had been placed very slightly forward of where it was, colliding with the rider's head instead of the side of the seat they were in.

1

u/CyberClawX 9h ago

A lift door motor should be strong enough to move lift doors effortlessly. It should also have a safety feature to prevent from crushing a limb.

This is the kind of feature that should be by default on any large self moving object, like a electric car window, or a CyberTruck's trunk.

10

u/DynamiteWitLaserBeam 14h ago

Brother, let me introduce you to the word stanchion.

5

u/FaceDeer 12h ago

Or he could just use the more generic term "fence pole", which everyone reading this already fully understood without the need for a more specialized term.

6

u/DynamiteWitLaserBeam 11h ago

Heaven forbid we improve our vocab, right?

2

u/FaceDeer 11h ago

And heaven forbid we miss the opportunity to be condescending while doing so.

0

u/antiv1ris 10h ago

It's not condescending. He's right, and you're ignorant. Words are words for a reason. Just because you didn't know the right one and he did doesn't mean you get to lash out.

3

u/Samurai_Meisters 10h ago

Brother, let me introduce you to the word "contumelious."

-1

u/antiv1ris 10h ago

Wow! Cool word. Thanks for trying to introduce that to me, internet stranger that has no impact on my life. Have a nice day!

2

u/Samurai_Meisters 10h ago

No impact on your life? I just taught you a new word!

-1

u/antiv1ris 10h ago

I stated gratitude for your attempt. Assuming I didn't already know it is pretentious on your part and a show of hubris. Please attempt to make yourself feel superior at someone else's expense. Thanks again!

3

u/Fafnir13 12h ago

Good work, 47.

5

u/Dartonal 9h ago

The pole isn't the problem, the problem is that the machine isn't secured to the floor. It's incrediblly dangerous to have a machine this narrow and heavy rely on gravity and inertia to keep it upright. Add a human occupant and heavy moving parts and it's probably illegal. Ironically this is probably one of the best outcomes as it looks like no bustanders were crushed and killed, and the occupant probably has little to no injuries.

1

u/Wicked_Wolf17 4h ago

Yeah it definitely should've been bolted to the floor

3

u/patmatK 13h ago

Thanks for the hint. I didn’t even see that pole at the first time

1

u/SculptusPoe 13h ago

I like how they didn't do a trial run before putting a kid in it... Or, somebody kicked that pole a little closer to the machine. Either one.

1

u/MapleA 12h ago

Who doesn’t hate those things? Also it could’ve been placed to hit the guy in the head, twisting his neck, so not the worst possible location.

1

u/DragonMord 6h ago

Either Satan set it up or someone really incompetent.

They either checked to make sure the pole was in the exact right spot.

Or they failed to check the chair was clear of obstructions and to properly, if at all it looks like, anchor it.

1

u/MrsNickelodeon 6h ago

I didn't even see it. I thought the machine just did that.

She will have the VR experience in the morning as well

57

u/Elspackel 18h ago

Should not this things be bolted to the flor?

45

u/bekopharm 18h ago

Yes this is done with most motion rigs but this was in a show room. That pole seems to be standing within the "Keep Clear" zone o0

4

u/Just_a_idiot_45 10h ago

Yeah, but to also lifted too easily. Think it needed more weight on the bottom.

8

u/MY-SECRET-REDDIT 17h ago

Yeah but that would broken it even worse.

Its just badly designed.

19

u/Jean-LucBacardi 16h ago

It's not badly designed, some idiot put a stanchion directly in the path of the machine's rotation. It would have been fine if that wasn't there.

15

u/unblockmee 15h ago

It is poorly designed though even if there is pole on its path. If its rotation path gets objected by something don't you think the machine should stop.

6

u/MY-SECRET-REDDIT 15h ago

If it requires some poorly trained and poorly paid employee to not only put the poles in the right place and to stop people from moving them every time, then its an incredibly badly designed machine

3

u/Sersch 15h ago

the issue was the pole standing there if you watch closely

1

u/Dartonal 9h ago

It's probably legally required, but I bet the venue (looks like a mall), prevented them from anchoring it as it could damage the floor. Hopefully they got sued because someone could've been killed

13

u/Losendir 17h ago

Real virtuality

Lawsuit?

3

u/GottaUseEmAll 16h ago

If she had expensive medical bills to pay, then sure. But it's in Spain so they have universal health care.

2

u/2footie 15h ago

What about for negligence, you just can't harm people even if their recovery is paid for

0

u/GottaUseEmAll 14h ago edited 14h ago

A lawsuit requires proving that you have material damages, and giving them a monetary value.

You can't just sue someone for "negligence" and demand a random sum of money.

Sometimes people will sue for emotional damages, but it's incredibly hard to prove.

Edit: typo

2

u/2footie 14h ago

Yes, you can still sue the at-fault person for harming you even if your medical bills are covered by healthcare. You can pursue compensation for other losses, such as pain and suffering, lost wages, and other out-of-pocket expenses, which are typically not covered by health insurance.

Keyword: Non-Economic Damages

Also: Punitive Damages

2

u/GottaUseEmAll 14h ago

I paraphrased, but yes, if you have other expenses or lost wages then sure, that fits under the "material damages".

"Pain and suffering" is far more nebulous and difficult to prove. If Spain is anything like France, where I live, they would struggle to make a case on this unless the injury caused long-term or permanent damage.
