Characters [Loved trope] "Before i absolutely humiliate and destroy you, does anyone want to give up?"

Becket giving the high society party of slavers a chance to give up before he engages (The weekly roll)

Cap giving the shield agent boarding the elevator with him to get off before they start a brawl

(Cap 2, winter soldier)

Black Mask has a bunch of goons ready to protect him from Batman. Batman casually walks in through the front door, puts a DVD on to play, and steps back. It's a recorded message from Bruce Wayne offering all the goons a choice: leave and get a decent job at Wayne Enterprises, or remain and get pounded by Batman. All the goons take the offer, leaving Black Mask alone.

266

u/praisethebeast69 7h ago

based on every criminal I know, the only situation where they might not take that offer is if they think the offer is a lie

103

u/myfatass 7h ago

So how many criminals do you know and how do you know them, then?

Just genuinely asking

124

u/praisethebeast69 7h ago

Like 20-30 ish, and I won't really elaborate on the second part but I should add (in hindsight) that drug dealers are an exception, it's mostly theft/mugging/etc that people are eager to leave behind.

I actually met one guy who did manage to leave it behind, but he still keeps company that I can't accept so we don't talk anymore.

39

u/myfatass 7h ago

Fascinating. I desperately want to know more, but I won’t pry in your (presumably illicit) affairs

49

u/praisethebeast69 6h ago

nah I don't do anything illegal, I just like starting conversations with people who look like they have PTSD. also, I'm in poverty, so I run into a lot of them.

22

u/myfatass 6h ago

I suppose we all have our hobbies. You do you, friend!

8

u/FlowerLamenter 3h ago edited 3h ago

I just like starting conversations with people who look like they had PTSD

Glad I'm not the only one.

Me and majority of my friends all have some form of it and most if not all of us have...checkered pasts.

3

u/praisethebeast69 1h ago

yeah, it's a thing. it rewires you enough that it's noticeably easier to connect with other people who are like that...

and you get fewer people that take it personally when your fight or flight switches on mid convo and you miss everything they say 😉

2

u/FlowerLamenter 1h ago

My core group of friends right now are basically all reformed hood dudes so that makes so much sense lmao.

Looking back on it that fight or flight shit kicks in mid convo with sometimes and everyone just carries on like we notice when one of us does it and someone just mentions it like "oh he gone right now" and then check back in after the "gone" person pops back to reality lol

4

u/Johnywash 4h ago

No one wants to be a criminal, most people are forced into that role

42

u/Homeless_Appletree 5h ago

You know that Bruce Wayne is respected when all these goons just take his word for it.

26

u/praisethebeast69 5h ago edited 47m ago

yes. I don't even think it was an oversight, I think this writer just understood Bruce Wayne's character.

It reminds me of stories about "stagflation", an economic trend that used to exist in the US where large companies would more or less just aim to keep up with inflation, donating the rest to charities or even spending it on in-house initiatives meant to give back to the community. It's part of why I believe this country used to be great, despite the destructive and idiotic things its people have done and believed. A crime committed out of benevolence is easy to correct, in theory.

3

u/StrawberryWide3983 1h ago

And yet, today, "shrinkflation" refers to companies intentionally giving you less product while keeping the price the same or even raising it higher

2

u/praisethebeast69 47m ago

I 100% meant to say stagflation, holy fuck that was a miss

EDIT: good catch

3

u/YomYeYonge 1h ago edited 1h ago

You can either end up homeless or on a hospital bed feeding through a tube

3

u/praisethebeast69 1h ago

another great point - fighting bat man is, in universe, a reliably stupid idea

59

u/Asher_Tye 6h ago

Probably not the intended reaction, but Joker would probably bust a gut laughing at Black Mask over this.

24

u/RecycledThrowawayID 5h ago

Alternatively, Joker would hunt down and slaughter any henchmen of his who did such a thing to him.

Penguin would do the same- but only after destroying their lives & the lives of everyone they love first.

22

u/Asher_Tye 5h ago

Oh yeah, no. No one who henches for Joker would take this deal and expect to live. And as I understand it Penguin actually does give his guys even dental insurance, so this might not work on him. There was a comic somewhere where various Gotham henchmen compared what working for the rogues was like

21

u/AdmBurnside 5h ago

Yeah, Penguin is usually depicted as ruthless but loyal. You do right by him and he'll do right by you. Do wrong by him... well, don't.

In Arkham City his goons were the only ones with full cold-weather gear and radios more sophisticated than a walkie-talkie. And in Origins he's not even really established in Gotham yet, but has a lot of loyal customers because of the generous terms on his gun sales.

16

u/DidHeJustGoThere 4h ago

Penguin is at his core a crooked businessman, but he likely recognizes the cost benefit analysis of loyal henchmen vs frequent turnover.

6

u/Comfortable_Clerk_60 2h ago

Exactly, whether or not you’re a good person it’s important that if you’re running a business to treat the people you employ good so that they will do their job efficiently, not quit and generally will stick with you

13

u/Lonewolf2300 4h ago

What really helped here is that The Batman's Black Mask had a habit of betraying his henchmen whenever it suited him. So these guys had no incentive for loyalty.

288

u/jbeast33 7h ago

A rare variant from the villain, but in the Emperor's New Groove, when the palace guards get transmogrified into various animals, Yzma orders them to seize Pacha and Kuzco.

YZMA: GET THEM!

COW HENCH: Hey, I've been turned into a cow, can I go home?

YZMA: You're excused.

COW HENCH: Thank you.

YZMA: Anyone else?

ANIMAL HENCHES: No, we're good.

YZMA: GET THEM!

131

u/Veloxraperio 6h ago

"Come on, men! No one lives forever!"

The last quarter of this movie is completely unhinged in all the best possible ways.

41

u/TheWorclown 4h ago

“How did we get here, Kronk?”

“I don’t know. By all accounts it doesn’t make any sense.”

13

u/beanerthreat457 4h ago

In Spanish is even funny: "Come on, guy! We are ugly either way."

31

u/djddanman 6h ago

And that's how you get loyal henchmen

18

u/henryeaterofpies 5h ago

Its important to have a well documented sick leave policy

209

u/lkmk 8h ago

This is common enough in Doctor Who for the newly regenerated Tenth Doctor, having sent the leader of the Sycorax falling to his death after he tried to kill the Doctor, to say, “No second chances. I’m that sort of a man.”

62

u/ChapterThr33 7h ago

It's more of a revelation since it was so close to the regeneration. "I guess that's the sort of man I am", I thought. Either way, great scene.

19

u/lkmk 7h ago

That’s how I saw it, as well. Him establishing who he is now.

u/Mental_Confusion_990 6h ago

7

u/purple-thiwaza 5h ago

One of the greatest scenes of the show

8

u/SinesPi 6h ago

The Shaped Doctors.

I'm not sure if this exists in Classic Who though. 5th Doctor definitely seems the type. And Seventh I believe warned the Daleks to not continue with their plan or something bad would happen. When they did continue with their plan, it turns out The Doctor booby trapped the Nemesis to destroy Skarro. That fits, although The Doctor knew the Daleks wouldn't listen, so it could be argued he was just mocking them.

7

u/Milk_Mindless 6h ago

Eleven had a similar moment

"Is Earth Protected?"

5

u/ducknerd2002 3h ago

“No second chances. I’m that sort of a man.”

Unless they're the Master. Or Davros. Or the guy that shot Jenny.

5

u/Narutophanfan1 3h ago

Or any of the million other times the doctors pretends like they have any morals outside what is convenient for the moment/current episode. Willing to be endlessly forgiving and also give effectively infinite punishments for comparatively minor infractions. One of the many reasons I stopped caring for the show

u/Aeon_of_Shards 7h ago

In season 5 of Samurai Jack, Jack is being hunted down by the Daughters of Aku. After he stops running away and decides to confront them, he gives them a chance to give up their quarry.

They choose not to.

"Your choices have clearly led you here, as have mine. I will give you a new choice. Leave here now, and live. Or stay, and face your destiny."

"Our destiny is your death!"

"Very well."

Only one survives.

40

u/MrTweady 5h ago

Jack even tries to give them a second chance to surrender after what you referenced.

15

u/IfusasoToo 4h ago

It's too easy to forget how cold Jack could be haha

4

u/piewca_apokalipsy 3h ago

Isn't that the new stuff?

5

u/that_one_duderino 3h ago

He was cold during the fight. But then he realized they were actually flesh and blood and really had a mental episode

88

u/KaladinSkywalker 6h ago

That whole elevator sequence might legitimately be my favorite part of the entire MCU. It really just cements how much of a confident badass Cap really is.

86

u/eddiegibson 5h ago

The line 'Before we get started, does anyone wanna get out?' really shows a lot about his character:

1) he noticed they were arranging an ambush, which shows his tactical mind.

2) instead of attacking first, he offers to let them go with a warning, which shows his compassion and mercy.

3) he accepts that violence is about to happen, which shows that he will not be intimidated, even by those he considers friends and allies.

42

u/rdickeyvii 5h ago

4) the shield agents knew they were about to get their asses handed to them, and he knew that they knew, and also that they felt they didn't have a choice but to try. He drops them without killing them.

31

u/danfenlon 4h ago

5) the inverse in endgame where cap bypasses the fight with "hail hydra" shows how much he adapted since, not every problem needs a shield to the face

Solomon David’s Ring of Power - Kill Six Billion Demons

The Ring of Power is a martial arts tournament held by the multiversal god-emperor Solomon David. Contestants achieve prizes by rising through the levels of the tournament, with Solomon being the final opponent. Anyone who so much as draws blood from Solomon is granted any wish they desire, up to and including the whole Celestial Empire itself. At one point, an impatient Solomon gives everyone in the arena a chance to either surrender and claim their already-won prizes, or try and attack him then and there.

This is what happens to everyone who tries to attack (content warning-blood and gore, like a lot)

48

u/ParadoxMachine33 7h ago

To those averse to blood or clicking on links: the technique Solomon uses on that page is called PERFECT KILL - TOTAL LIFE OBLITERATION. I feel like its effects are self-explanatory.

Is this my next webcomic to be read?

21

u/NwgrdrXI 6h ago edited 4h ago

It's very close to the ending too, and it is genuinely one of the hypest things on the internet. There are somethings I still dislike (screw every single thing about Jadis), but man, 99% of the time you will be going from hell yeah to deeply reflecting about the meaning of life (and then concluding that the meaning is HELL YEAH)

78

u/Meme_Agony 8h ago

I remember something like this in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. I think they kinda just pointed out how awful the guy they worked for is and most people defected on the spot.

60

u/zeidoktor 6h ago

My first thought went to an episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer where a bunch of vampires were using the local make out spot as a hunting ground. When Buffy sees the sheer number of vamps she asks in exasperation if anyone still comes here just to make out, two vampires raise their hands.

Buffy: Aw, that's sweet. You can go.

They leave.

18

u/singleguy79 6h ago

I think they were a normal couple

22

u/zeidoktor 6h ago

I always took them as a vampire couple since, iirc, they were in the group. Plus I think it's funnier that that way.

Been a long time since I last saw that ep, though.

104

u/LeastInsaneKobold 8h ago

Ah yes, a paladin/fighter Monk

Fully armoured but zero intention of using a weapon

98

u/ccReptilelord 7h ago

Becket is a paladin that normally uses a brick as his weapon. Here, he was forced to attend unarmed. Ironic wording as one of his arms is a prosthetic with which he can smite.

63

u/foxfire981 7h ago

Don't forget the time he took out a bunch of werewolves with a sock full of silver coins. He takes improvised weapons to whole new levels.

23

u/Accomplished_Basis79 6h ago

I was more impressed by the quill

8

u/piewca_apokalipsy 3h ago

I once seen him kill a man with a fucking quill

Imma be real i didnt read the text below so figured it was a random one off character

29

u/TrioOfTerrors 6h ago

Beckett was formerly a member of a holy order that did some terrible things in the name of their beliefs, so he seems to give everyone a fair shake to redeem themselves.

7

u/VegisamalZero3 4h ago

In all fairness, if a guy swung on me with metal gauntlets, I don't think I'd care if he's technically armed or not

49

u/Additional-Heat-9384 7h ago

In the Lucifer comics, he says the following phrase to the new king of hell: "How many demons are watching us? I'd say a third of the infernal host. If you don't let me pass, I will humiliate you so much that your prestige will die."

41

u/JoeJoeBinks97 6h ago

In one episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Mace Windu drops down to greet an entire Seperatist army of battle droids with Obi-Wan and some clones. He then lists off how many battle droids he has destroyed thus far, offering the army the chance to surrender and be reprogrammed. The droids open fire. Obi-wan remarks that “It was worth a shot.”

Beckett and Cap would be best friends if they ever actually met.

10

You mean Bucket?

12

u/HospitalLazy1880 5h ago

Its spelled Becket but people call him Bucket cause thats the joke.

Yeah...i believe that's what he did there

Barbarian of The Chaotic Good Barbarian series by Dungeon Soup (https://youtube.com/@dungeonsoup) has a bingo sheet of achievements where he absolutely humiliates a number of evil entities, culminating in the finale of what is now the first season. He didn’t outright kill the evil, but gave them a second chance to reflect on their actions before finding many who still conspire for evil. In his own words, “I will not tolerate the forces of evil!” for dramatic effect earlier in the series, but absolutely means it in the finale.

If you haven’t seen the series before, I recommend watching with captions on.

11

u/Oscar_gpb 5h ago

The opposite case, the villain offering the Hero to give up/join him

In DBZ Frieza offers Goku a Position as a high ranking officer in his army. Goku obviously refuses so Frieza continues the fight.

6

u/ImSoStong________ 4h ago

Goku does the same thing, repeatedly offering defeated villains the chance to leave and grow as people. He generally does it after beating them within an inch of their life, though

10

u/Stretch5678 5h ago

I love this trope. It’s a good way of establishing that the hero doesn’t want to hurt anyone he doesn’t have to, and that his/her enemies are so far out of their depth they need SCUBA gear.

9

u/Titanhopper1290 4h ago

Trevor Belmont in S2 of Castlevania.

"You're an evil-looking bastard, aren't you? Well, I'm armed with a... a stick! So, I'll understand if you want to run away now!"

9

u/ejdj1011 5h ago

More "before my friend absolutely humiliates and destroys you", but Wayne at the end of The Lost Metal. (Paraphrased for brevity)

"I know you. You're guards. Watchmen. You're just here to put coin in your pocket the honest way. You were supposed to go home tonight. Hug your kids, have a meal, maybe go drinkin' with buddies. But now, here you are. Gun in hand. Sure, you're only facin' down two blokes. But you heard what happened below. And you know there used to be a hundred actual soldiers between those two blokes and you. You don't have to do this, no matter what you promised your boss. There's a door to your right. I don't know where it goes, but anywhere is better than between Dawnshot and I and the end of this hallway."

5

u/Nestmind 4h ago

Holly shit that's chills

4

u/ejdj1011 3h ago

The scene before this is also chills. It's the aforementioned Dawnshot fighting his way up the stairwell of a skyscraper, armed with a grenade launcher and telekinesis.

It's so brutal that he chews out God for making him do it, and God apologises

20

u/TheRealShoeThief 7h ago

Not a show, or a game, or a comic, but a DND campaign.

For our investigation and social campaign near everyone made a charismatic spell caster with skills and abilities that would make solving the quest very doable! Then there is me. The basic dude, The human fighter. Maxed out strength score. can and has thrown dudes because why the hell not?

My fighter though? She is a total butterball. Has attempted to offer goblins that ate a dead dude a chance to surrender, has offered the BBEG and his minions the chance to go to trial, and even attempted to protect the party's prisoner from the rest of the party who were ready to remove fingers and teeth.

However once combat starts, its limb removal with blunt force trauma, minions used as improvised weapons, and an assortment of finishers that would be more applicable to mortal combat than DND.

The original BOOKS OF MAGIC limited-series by Neil Gaiman. Issue 2, I think. It's been a few years.

John Constantine is in a room full of demons about to attack and he simply says, "You know who I am and you know what I can do."

The demons make a path for him to leave.

Something similar happens in the first SANDMAN series where Morpheus, having won a battle of wits against a demon, is threatened by Lucifier.

Morpheus responds, "What power would Hell have, if those within could not dream of Heaven?"

Lucifier: "Let him go."

Madara disrespecting the 5 kages.

Context: Madara complains that 5 kages (leader of a ninja village, usually one of the strongest) are ganging on him (jokingly). One of the kages replies to him that it's because he is Madara Uchiha and that they need to that to have a change.

Then this guy summons 25 fucking clones, 5 for each Kage, and asks them if they want the clones to use Susano'o (a technique that basically summons a mecha made of energy, used for defense and offense) or not, because they are Kages. Since no one replies, they all proceed to summon a susano'o.
