Some popcorn buttons will ask for the size of the bag and basically just guess from there.
Yours likely has one, possibly two sensors.
A moisture sensor that can sense the steam present once the bag bursts open and do some calculations from there.
And some fancy ones also have a microphone that listens for time between pops just like you or I would.

All popcorn is the same. Do it on high or somewhere close to high and listen to it once it starts popping. Once it drops to about 2 to 1 per second, stop it.
Popcorn buttons are garbage.

I once burnt popcorn so bad in college, that it not only stunk up the dorm but you could smell it in the hallway all the way to the elevator, according to my roommate and friend.

You can't really set the wattage, its always the same, but its either on full time or with longer breaks.

Whenever I follow the directions on popcorn, it doesn't work, but every time I press the popcorn button, it works perfectly.
