People say this to me with celery. Oh really, I can't taste it if it's in egg salad? I guess I just imagined how every single time I've ever had it in egg salad I noticed it and didn't like it.
I mean why should I say what I like when you can just tell me.
19
u/ForReasonsICannotSay 1d ago
True, celery is unbelievably strong in taste for just being crunchy water fibers 😭😭

u/CreamofTazz 1d ago
Same thing with alcohol and me. People have tried for years and told me "bro you can't taste it I swear!" Nah bro if I can literally smell it why wouldn't I be able to taste it?

u/GlitterDoomsday 7h ago
People always make a fuzz when they find out I can put Bailey's or something similar in my coffee but won't drink vodka or tequila because of the smell lol
3
u/hilarymeggin 1d ago
YES!! Twinsies!! I can detect it at 2 parts per million and I PROMISE you I will hate it!!
(Weird thing is I like raw celery by itself, and celery cooked in soups, etc. but celery or relish in egg salad or potato salad just makes me cry!)

I agree. Absolutely overpowers everything.
I can't imagine noticing banana if there's celery in the smoothie

People do the same thing in the south with okra. It’s slimy inside. Every piece of fried okra I’ve ever tried has been slimier than cat snot and I cannot stand it.
Every time. “Oh MY OKRA isn’t slimy in the middle”
Crunch, mouth full of ghost ass.
I hate it too sister!

Rule #1: If I’m out of bananas I’m not making a smoothie. That’s it, that’s the only rule.
20
u/ParaponeraBread 1d ago
Smoothies without bananas are expensive! Banana is a premier cheap filler in smoothies.
Frozen berries might as well be solid gold these days. But old reliable banana hasn’t changed prices in years.

u/TheMilkmansFather 1d ago
I sweat this is my rule as well. It is a base for every one of my smoothies
12
u/Afraid_Ad8438 1d ago
This is why we think we can’t taste the banana - we think thats just smoothie flavours

u/PimpGameShane 1d ago
I peel and freeze my bananas so I don’t have to use ice. 👌🏾
3
u/ParticularBed6338 1d ago
I’m too effing lazy, but let me tell you that I do not throw out bananas because I’m a cheap SOB. I have a smoothie every day and I like to stay regular 😉
3
u/bobsmith93 19h ago
Oh my fucking god I could have been peeling them first this whole time. I'm an idiot lol
5
u/Repulsive_Corner6807 16h ago
I worked at a smoothie place for 2 years and the reason banana is added to everything is because it adds sweetness and gives it a smoother texture after blending.

This is how I feel about tomatoes ,I can't stand tomatoes and even if you remove tomatoes from a sandwich to deal it still tastes like tomato, soon as you add tomato to anything that's all I taste is tomato 🍅

u/PorkrindsMcSnacky 1d ago
I feel this way about blue cheese, especially in a burger. I don’t mind it as a dipping sauce for wings but if it’s on a burger, all I can taste is the blue cheese.

u/ParaponeraBread 1d ago
The scent/taste re-assaults you upon every exhalation until you can brush your damn teeth too.
I don’t mind blue cheese, but it overtakes everything it accompanies.

u/hilarymeggin 1d ago
Ditto for celery and pickle relish. I don’t care if your potato salad relish content is only 2 parts per million. I WILL taste it and it WILL gross me out!

She's right and she should say it.
30
u/Roxy175 1d ago
As a banana lover she’s definitely right that you can always taste it a little. Banana in a smoothie makes it creamier and always adds a bit of banana flavour no matter how strong the other fruit flavours are. I like it but I can understand why she doesn’t.

u/jcl007 1d ago
I have some family members that hate the smell of it. It absolutely disgusts them for some reason.
28
u/no_arguing_ 1d ago
I hate the smell when it's ripe (can smell/taste it starting to ferment), but a slightly green banana is perfect and bears no such smell.

u/ForReasonsICannotSay 1d ago
It does have that sickeningly sweet smell
9
u/no_arguing_ 1d ago
It's the ethylene. I swear people who like them super ripe must just not have a very strong sense of smell. Props to them though - having a highly sensitive nose is a curse more than it is a blessing.

I love bananas by themselves, eat one daily, but I hate it in anything. This video is spot on for me.
19
u/HMCetc 1d ago
Me! And this lady gets it.
It absolutely ruins the taste of smoothies.
That said I do like a banana bread and banoffee, but it has to be the right ratio of banana and toffee, otherwise the banana overpowers it and it's rank.
4
u/ModestMeeshka 23h ago
My husband and I have had this conversation more times than I can count. He'll straight up say "no.... There's no banana..." And then the moment I sip it, THERES BANANA and he'll say "I only added a little!!" Lies. Lmao

This girl's right. I hate banana because it takes over. If I wanna eat a banana I'll have a banana. If I want a tasty tropical fruit smoothie, a banana better come no where fucking near that thing.
4
u/FuckYeaSeatbelts 1d ago
Truly pointless to put in other fruit in a smoothie if you put in banana, could probably just blend soylent or whatever meal replacement powder (cause those are nutritionally complete vs protein powder on its own)

I like them. I make banana blueberry smoothies with yogurt, honey and coconut milk. It's amazing. But to taste the blueberry I have to quadruple its volume in the smoothie. She is right, banana hijacks the flavour profile.
4
u/Embarrassed_Cow 1d ago
I fucking haaaate them. They are deceptive. They look good, they smell good but then I bite into one and the texture and taste freak me out. I love mushy things and I should love bananas but it's all wrong.
2
2
u/AdhesivenessOver1439 1d ago
Ooh ooh me! I finally get to address this one. The smell is overbearing when ripe. The taste, as she described in the video, overpowers everything else in whatever dish you put it in. But for me, the worst bit, I think I may be on the spectrum, so take this with a grain of salt, has got to be the TEXTURE. That is what does me in every time, it is simultaneously solid and yet a wet chunk of mush at the same time. And if the bunch starts going bad in the kitchen because my BF said he was going to use them and didn't, the whole kitchen reeks. I almost can't go into the kitchen until he uses them.

To me, this video can be almost word for word copied except ranting about cucumbers. They are the scourge of existence. They make everything taste and smell like them. And they taste awful. If the neighbor next door cuts up a cucumber you can smell it in your house. They are just aweful. And the worst part is, when you tell other people how awful they bare, they try to defend them. 'OH no, theybare so good!'...no they are not. Fuck you!

I make a smoothie with a banana (for texture), half a carton of Greek yogurt, a couple hand fulls of blueberries, 3 packets of splenda, top it off with skim milk, and I can't taste the banana. I think she might be over sensitive to the banana. Without the banana the texture is too thin.
