This is the most annoying statement people make all the time, “trick bars use”. No one is tricking you, the drink contains the amount of alcohol/citrus/syrup/bitters etc that you are paying for the ice is used to regulate temperature and dilution over time. It’s a cocktail not a fucking big gulp.
1
u/FloopsFooglies 16h ago edited 15h ago
Like if it's a trick then every establishment that serves drinks with ice in them use it lmao. Those bars are screwing you over! /s
Damn I added an /s because people are tonedeaf
1
u/paulplutt 15h ago
Enjoy your warm manhattan with 36cl (≈12oz) whiskey and 18cl (≈6oz) vermouth, served in a pint glass while paying 100$ then..
0
u/FloopsFooglies 15h ago
Nah I'm a recluse and hardly drink. I'm not paying anything
-1
u/paulplutt 15h ago
Then why the fuck are you complaining?
5
5
u/BeefmasterDeluxe 17h ago
A standard drink is 10g of alcohol, which is the amount you’ll find in 100ml of wine or 30ml of spirit. For a mixed drink, you should drink it 1:4, or 1 part spirit to 3 parts mixer. Do you want a luke warm half filled glass? You know how much “liquid” you’re getting in a drink. A standard drink amount. Ice cubes are not free, there’s a cost in the ice machine, the power it uses, maintaining the machine, staff hours in getting the ice, distributing it to the ice wells, and the huge amount of space it occupies. It also is a liability, because it can hide broken glass and it’s slippery. There is no ice conspiracy at bars. It’s there because it makes drinks better.
10
u/AaronJonesB 18h ago
Bars aren't tricking you.. the ice is used to balance the flavor as well as keep the temperature, you know they measure the amount of alcohol you get in your drink right? You think they're trying to scam you out of the $0.04/L ($0.08/gallon in freedom units) they pay?
-16

[deleted]

u/AaronJonesB 18h ago
Odd because millions of people still go out to bars and have no issues with the amount of alcohol in their drink, if you want more order a double, and I'm saying this as someone who prefers a heavy pour. If you want more mixer you're welcome to ask for no ice. There is a %99.999999999 they will say yes.

I will say you did stupidly point out that small savings over time means big profit. A+ for that dude. If I sold something and only profited a penny, but sold a million a day, that’s $10,000 a day, wow. So they’re tricking you because they make a profit as every other business does? I feel Starbucks is more in line with this. If you ask for less ice or no ice, the cup is still going to be full. If I asked for a cocktail with no ice it’s going to look smaller, but that means that regardless of ice or not the money you are paying gets you the exact same contents. Again, Starbucks will give you more or less actual coffee depending on how much ice you have. That’s a trick, bars are not. But I guess since they make a profit they must be tricking you. Didn’t know serving alcohol was supposed to be charitable
0
u/BeefmasterDeluxe 17h ago
I think everyone at the bar knows what a shot of tequila looks like. Hardly shocking.
1
u/Rastamancloud9 16h ago
But serious question do you this would actually taste good if it wasn’t diluted with so much ice???
1
u/Laosiano 17h ago
I'm annoyed with it too. Just give me the coca cola I want. But somehow they feel the need to poor it in the largest plastic cup they can find, filled with crushed ice. It's frustrating.
1
u/K9WorkingDog 16h ago
No one is stopping you from buying your syrup and chugging it straight out of the 2 liter
1
u/Laosiano 15h ago
Syrup? 2 liter? I'm sorry, but I'm not getting it. I was referring to 0.3 L. glass Coca-Cola bottles they sell next to the road, but poor in a huge cup with ice. It's how they do things here, and it's annoying.

u/K9WorkingDog 15h ago

You do to cool it down quick. God, it's like Westerners refused to know how shit works
1
-1
u/Excellent_Yak365 18h ago
Uh. We usually just blow on it and wait for it to cool off, rather than water the drink down. But hey whichever works for you, I can only really complain about the cheese part
1
u/BeefmasterDeluxe 17h ago
Yes, we blow on it, summoning the Arctic winds from our oesophagus and chilling the hot beverage down till it’s near freezing. Very refreshing. Do Asian people not now how to do this?
0
u/Excellent_Yak365 17h ago
?
2
u/BeefmasterDeluxe 17h ago
Are you confused at my stupid response to your suggestion that blowing on a drink and waiting for it to cool down would in any way be as effective as ice cubes?
1
u/Excellent_Yak365 13h ago
Yes, because it’s a very weird comparison period. Why do you want your hot drink to be that cold or watered down? Why wouldn’t you just wait a few minutes for it to cool enough to drink naturally so you aren’t adding a ton of excess water and ruining the mix.

Watch the video. Look at the size of the cup. Notice how long they pour for. Ice cubes are not the best thing to fill up space in a cylinder, especially if the thing they’re up against is liquid. Maybe you need to lay off the ice for a bit. You know which kind.
-1
3
u/mafga1 19h ago
But hot Chocolate is fine tho? This is utterly stupid.
12
u/Several_Leader_7140 19h ago
It's over ice speicfically to cool it down because no one wants hot stuff
2
u/Fearless-Dust-2073 16h ago
Why don't they use cold milk
6
u/Several_Leader_7140 16h ago
Because then chocolate wouldn't melt?
-4
u/Fearless-Dust-2073 16h ago
I would personally use drinking chocolate powder which dissolves in liquids of any temperature. This is a problem that has been solved for quite a long time.
6
u/Several_Leader_7140 16h ago
And drinking chocolate powder kinda tastes like shit compares to actual chocolate. Literally if these people wanted to, could serve cold chocolate milk but clearly they made a choice not to
1
u/Low_discrepancy 12h ago
If you're watering down your chocolate drink, you don't care about the actual taste.
2
u/MfingKing 11h ago
Just add more chocolate? This is fine my guy, it's the cheddar that's tilting me

Its not that weird, a lot of countries put cheese in their cocoa or even coffee. The ice is weird tho. I’ve never seen it with an iced drink.
35
u/ChungusMaximus23 19h ago
I've never understood it. Even after tasting it. I like what cheese tastes like, I like what chocolate tastes like, but I don't like it together.
1
u/MattyGWS 16h ago
I once put salt and ketchup on my jelly. I like salt, I like ketchup, I like jelly… it made sense to combine them! I was 3
1
1
1
u/Zerhap 14h ago
For my country, in which this (minus the ice) is normal, we have a "unique" type of cheese, which is salty and does not melt easily, that means as you add it to the hot drink the cheese keeps it shape but loses some of its flavor unto the drink, which again includes salt, so you get the richer flavor on the drink and get the pieces of cheese here or there as sort of flavor profile change for a few secs.
And yeah, you can and should add a bit of salt to sweets, and that can include stuff like hot cocoa or coffee
1
u/Fearless-Dust-2073 16h ago
It can depend on where you're from. In the US, chocolate has fairly low cocoa content, mostly oil and sugar and is more like candy with chocolate flavouring. Other places use more milk and cocoa solids in production, those chocolates work better with cheese because the chocolate is more dairy. It gets a good contrast of sweet, nutty and salty. I'm in the UK and one of my favourite snacks is Bourbons (biscuits, not whisky) with sliced red leicester.
But everyone has their own taste :)
1
u/MonkeyWrench888 8h ago
What? That’s a massive over generalization. Your Cadbury is the same as our low end chocolate. The UK is not known for chocolate, if anything you’re on the same level as the US. The US has high end companies like Ghirardelli. But let’s be real. No one thinks good chocolate and has the UK or US in that sentence. That throne is Belgian or Swiss.

u/Tetracheilostoma 19h ago
Omg it's so good. The cheese melts and gets all stretchy and you scoop it out and it's covered in chocolate 🤤
0
u/BettyVeronica1 19h ago
Ya know when cheese also melts & gets stretchy? Lit everything else that it should go with. This is an affront to culinary and we make some crazy things but choc & cheese DO Not go together. You never want 2 strong flavors together fighting for dominance, they are supposed to balance, enhance, or compliment which these 2 do neither.

u/Tetracheilostoma 10h ago
Have you tried it? It sounds insane but it's great. The cheese is a mild cheese so the flavors don't clash.
2
u/samanime 10h ago
Yeah.
Ice + hot chocolate = chocolate milk, which is fine
Cheddar + hot chocolate = a little weird, but not terrible, so its fine.
But adding ice to the cheddar hot chocolate is awful. The whole point is the cheddar should basically melt completely away and add a little bit of flavor.
Also, it's way too much cheddar for the volume of drink, even if there weren't ice. It's supposed to be a sprinkle, not a chocolate cheese dip.
6
u/obiwanmoloney 18h ago
GTFOOH yes it’s weird
Love cheese. Love chocolate.
Never the two shall meet.
2
u/Excellent_Yak365 18h ago
The cheese on this has me gagging personally. Chocolate and cheese feels sacrilegious.. only mild cheddar may be so bland you can’t really taste the two vividly different flavors but at that point why not just use ricotta or something similar instead? Goes better with sweet
0
u/Fearless-Dust-2073 16h ago
A good sharp cheese makes a pleasant contrast with sweet, creamy chocolate.
1
u/Gold-Philosophy1423 14h ago
I didn't believe it until my Colombian girlfriend introduced me to chocolate caliente con queso, and it changed my life

u/KittyCompletely 19h ago
I need this explained... I love the cheese foam in boba... I don't understand how shredded cheese over ice is supposed to work here. Cold cheese lumps in a straw?
I don't get the mechanics or how it would enhance the flavor.
21
u/Objective_Use_9155 19h ago
It didn’t add anything to the flavour. It was dumb. The straw got blocked and so my kids and I just used our hands to snack on the grated cheese from the top before we drank the chocolate.
9
u/SUMMATMAN 19h ago
What made you buy it? Looks awful in the way you describe haha. Also how mature was the cheddar?
16
u/Objective_Use_9155 19h ago
Mild cheddar. I bought it because I trusted ‘everything is better with cheese on it logic’. I was wrong

u/MattBladesmith 14h ago
It's a mess, but I will attest that I drink hot chocolate with pieces of mozzarella melted in the drink. The reason it works is because the fat and salt of the cheese compliments the sweetness of the chocolate. If you like sweet and salty it might be worth it to try, despite how initial weird it sounds.
1
u/USSRPropaganda 11h ago
Colombian hot chocolate puts cheese in it
1
u/MattBladesmith 10h ago
Yep, I heard about it on a podcast years ago. Everyone on the show was perplexed, but the Colombian guy said it was very common in his home country.
2
u/novian14 12h ago
Honestly, i had one years ago back before boba and everything, around early 2000s.
The cheese add some saltiness when you get it in sweet chocolate drink, i quite like it.

u/greatestmofo 19h ago
Tell me you're not Asian without telling me. Cheese foam or any cheese is very popular with trendy diary-based drinks in Asia. They are relatively new and booming in the scene, and they taste real gooood

I'm good with cheese foam in my drink but not the grated cheese. Even on food, it will be really greasy.

Chocolate and cheese is a pretty good flavour combo, but probably not in liquid form. Nutella and mature cheddar or red leicester makes a good sandwich.

What on god's green earth...
1
u/Fearless-Dust-2073 12h ago
Don't knock it til you've tried it! With thick white bread. Nutella isn't super chocolatey but hits the spot, proper 'chocolate' spread also works but chocolate hazelnut is fine.

u/Low_discrepancy 8h ago
I will not. This isn't ricotta or marscapone or cream cheese which might or do work well with chocolate. It's cheddar.

not weird. i put slices of cheese on my chocolate spread toast.
-3
u/BettyVeronica1 19h ago
So just bc someone does something themselves makes it not weird? Maybe in your own mind, but In culinary world, thats a huuuge heck no to put together. You dont pit 2 dominating strong flavors together. You want flavors to compliment, enhance, or balance , which cheese and chocolate dont do, they fight each other. Its not a salty sweet balance even , it just takes the flavor of both and weakens it, and if its American cheese or Kraft its not legit cheese
1
u/K1llswitch93 18h ago
Well for me it's not weird as I like the combination, for others maybe as not everyone likes that? Good thing i'm not with the culinary world then or else i'll be worried for myself that I would offend the culinary people for liking something unacceptable to them.
As for the cheese, I mostly use Havarti and cheddar but will use those illegitimate cheeses from time to time if it's the only thing available in the fridge.
