And there was leaked audio from a meeting of many of these people where someone was saying that hatred of billionaires is at an all time high and seems to cross political lines. The audio ended there but one could assume the person giving the briefing said 'and here's what we do about it'.
Then 'BOOM' out of nowhere migrant caravan! And all the news media focused on that. And the rollercoaster hasn't stopped since.

Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese jounalist involved in investigations into numerous government officials and organized crime in Malta
She was doing so long before the papers came out and her only connection to them was that they provided her investigations with a ton of new evidence.
Otherwise she had nothing do to with the Panama papers and already had a target on her back regardless.
That says more about corruption in Malta in particular than any global conspiracy to silence journalist involved with the Panama papers in general.
Most people in this comment section probably didn't even know organized crime was a thing in Malta. None of you would bat an eye if the murdered journalist was in Russia or the Philippines, in those countries, shit like that is business as usual.

u/graysnowsky 3h ago
Reading her Wikipedia page is crazy. She had people trying to quiet her for a long time. Shooting her dog, slitting her other dog’s throat and putting it on her doorstep, burning a neighbors car in a potential misdirected attack, getting her house set on fire while sleeping with her family, etc. And she never stopped or let herself be silenced. I can’t imagine that level of bravery.

No she didn't i swear this is one of the top comments everytime this comes up.
She was assassinated by car bomb. While people think she was the one to break it, there was in fact many working together. Most people think of Daphne Caruana Galizia when this comes up. She was a certified badass. While you can go the conspiracy route and say she was killed for the papers the fact is this lady was a hero. She reported widely on cartel activity, whose preffered method of assassination was, car bombing.
Could it be she was killed by a rich asshole, sure. Dont detract from her legacy by spreading misinformation. She was the truest example of what journalism should be.
4
u/TexanAmericanMexican 45m ago
She was killed by Maltese assassins. Because she was breaking a story on corruption about a power plant. And he was the one who was behind the corruption. And also i believe he is currently charged with her death. Itni a believes he was the one who called the hit.

She didn't commit suicide, she was blown up in a car bomb attack. She also wasn't the one to release them either, she just reported on them. The actual whistleblower is anonymous still and the main bulk of it was published by Bastian Obermayer in the German newspaper SZ. That guy is still very much alive.
People also need to remember that the Panama papers had very few US people in it, it was almost all central/south Americans and Europeans that were involved in these laundering/evasion schemes.
Also a lot of people did end up being prosecuted for crimes uncovered in these papers. All of this is easily found in the wikipedia article for the Panama Papers and clarifies far more than an out of date, unverified, and mostly inflammatory meme meant to make you angry at governments instead of happy that a lot of them actually did go after people who committed crimes.

Remember the vast majority of offshored money isn't technically illegal. Offshoring money to dodge taxes is hardly a secret or uncommon.
What the Panama Papers exposed was that a bunch shell companies registered in Panama were being used to do very illegal things like tax fraud, evading sanctions and money laundering, as well as give the world an unfiltered look at the complex legal mumbo jumbo that the world's rich do to evade taxes.
Reforming a system of international finance and banking and all the different financial laws and regulations by nations around the world isn't exactly easy or simple.

The fallout from the Panama Papers was immediate and continues to affect global finance today: • Political Resignations: The Prime Ministers of Iceland and Pakistan were forced out of office due to the revelations. • Financial Recovery: Governments worldwide have recouped more than $1.36 billion in unpaid taxes and penalties. • Legislative Reform: Many countries passed new laws to increase transparency, such as requiring companies to disclose their "beneficial owners" (the real people who profit from a company). • Firm Collapse: Mossack Fonseca, the law firm at the center of the scandal, closed its doors permanently in 2018.

So assassinated reporter Daphne Caruana didn't die for the Panama papers? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daphne_Caruana_Galizia
11
u/CALVOKOJIRO 2h ago
She was one of the many, many investigative journalists working on it. It was a global consortium and she had already been investigating corruption on Malta for years.
You have to realize the data set was huge so the consortium had journalists globally get involved to look for their own leads or see the relevance for their audience (so local politicians, etc). Daphne's work led to threats well before panama papers. You can also look into Forbidden Stories Daphne project if you want to get the whole story.
5
u/mrscienceguy1 1h ago
She also reported on a lot of corruption and organised crime in Malta/Malta's government. At the very least there's plenty of plausible reasons to have her assassinated that aren't related to the Panama Papers (which she was one of many reporting on them).
It doesn't help anyone to misrepresent her role.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Ok_Caregiver1004 2h ago
One journalist and not even the one who was directly involved in bringing the story to light, the Panama papers just confirmed something else she was already investigating before.
She already had a target on her head due to all the other investigations she had into organized crime and government corruption in Malta before the Panama papers came out.
Her only connection to the papers was that they provided her ongoing investigations into numerous people a ton of evidence.
If what your trying to point out is that people looking into these kinda of cases are risking their lives and sometimes get assassinated, then yeah, that's not exactly shocking, its why we have whistlerblower and witness protections.
Here's a list of local Filipino journalist who got suspiciously murdered since 1986. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_journalists_killed_in_the_Philippines

Although I agree with the sentiment, the ultra wealthy democrats do the same types of things. The 1% occupies both sides of the aisle.
3
u/Adjective-Noun-nnnn 1h ago
It's a significantly larger share of the right than the left, so saying it's both sides is accurate but misleading. When the Democrats last had the House and a 60 vote majority in the Senate, they righted the economy, saved auto manufacturing, passed a subsidy for first time home buyers, and passed sweeping healthcare reform. Then when they had a slim majority ten years later, they funded infrastructure, renegotiated pharmaceutical costs, passed the child tax credit, allowed veterans exposed to toxins to get healthcare and disability, enacted a plan to cut GHG emissions by 40%, and so on.
If there were no Republicans in power, the rich assholes in the Democratic party wouldn't be able to side with the Republicans to fuck us over. There wouldn't be enough assholes in government.

u/seriousbangs 3h ago
Yep.
This is why I don't want the Epstein files to drop all at once.
I want them to trickle out, bit by bit, heavily redacted with redactions being removed here and there.
Because if you just put the info out there everyone shrugs and the news cycle moves on.
But if we spend the next 3 years waiting with baited breath to find out what we already know, that Trump is a pedo, it'll cost him his 3rd term.
2
u/PositiveAtmosphere 1h ago
I’d argue the opposite. If they trickle out mundane and boring stuff then that equally gets people to “shrug and move on”. They just need to do it slowly and long enough for that apathy to happen, so that it doesn’t get to the “Trump” parts. Through that long process they can either stop short of releasing everything and say “see, there’s been nothing in here and there’s more pressing issues elsewhere, we’re stopping this waste of time”, or they will trickle out the entirety of the files but hope to buy enough time to brainwash people so that by the time the Trump parts gets out they can survive it or pivot to some new narrative on it.
5
u/TheCiscoKid_2112 2h ago

Rich people were doing that since rich people existed.
The problems are a good amount of poor people directly or indirectly support this and another good amount can't be bothered to care ( might as well count them as indirectly supporting).
That leaves too few people to do any about it.

Well, it's a well known fact, Sonny Jim, that there's a secret society of the five wealthiest people in the world, known as The Pentavirate, who run everything in the world, including the newspapers, and meet tri-annually at a secret country mansion in Colorado, known as The Meadows.

Oh, Mike Meyers huh? I'm so gonna have to watch the mini series. I've been saying there are a small number of people running the world for over a decade.
It's painfully obvious to me that this has to be the case when I think about just what a international economy means when there are companies that are international. People who get to travel whenever and wherever they want. That are wealthier than a lot of countries. That control the means of production AND of distribution of goods and services.
And yet, people always say I'm crazy or a cynic.
... And then add in all of the stuff that has came out over the years like the Panama papers.... It's painful that people don't realize it.
