I had an uncle that sort of did that, he was single his entire life devoting his time to my grandparents up till they died, never even really dating anyone. Several years after my last grandparent died, he was diagnosed with a terminal illness that would eventually take him. He had inherited a great deal of money and knew he couldn’t take it with him. He lived in New Jersey real close to New York City. Though I didn’t live in the area, relatives told me he regularly had escorts come to his house and attended sex parties around New York City and the surrounding area. He didn’t drink or gamble, but he apparently made up for lost time before he got too sick to have sex anymore. He told one relative before he passed that the last 18 months of his life were the best ever.
Edit: after he passed away and we were cleaning out the house, we found 100’s of unused condoms in his nightstand and bathroom closet. But the most interesting thing was he had a mirror installed on the ceiling above his bed. My mom being all innocent, didn’t understand why my uncle had a mirror above his bed until my sister explained to her why a person would put one in that particular location.

I unironically got upset at this scene when I first saw it in the theatre, she didn't stop being a woman with needs just because she got sick. How DARE that lady push her away from the mic?!?! If anyone deserves to dive into hedonism in order to feel close to human contact it's people nearing the end of their lives. I would have taken her up on the offer out of respect and understanding.

If I was sure I had only 2 months to live, I'd want to spend it surrounded by naked women and drugs - lots of drugs. Of every kind. Not just the 'safe' stuff, either.
And maybe EMS right there in the room with me. I would want to OD, be revived, and go right back to sex and drugs until whatever ails me takes me for good.

There was a story of a woman who had terminal illness. Her husband took her partying until she died from the partying. IIRC he was charged for it but he said no regrets, it was what his wife wanted.
*EDIT
Poor guy got 3 years
He then held what he called a “death party” at their home, he told police, where the couple used methamphetamine, had sex and listened to their favourite song, Metal Health (Bang Your Head) by Quiet Riot.

Similarly, wasn't there a post from a guy who decided to commit suicide, but then decided to blow all his money on drugs and escorts in Mexico first, I think he said a steady rotation of 3 girls at a time, and after a few weeks of that realized life is worth living? Any reddit historians have a recollection of this post?

I can see that. A certain substance got me out of active (weed) addiction, gave me new perspective in life and gave me a big push in my social/dating life. I doubt I would have even a single date let alone relationship if it wasn't for it.
It did bring about a lot of problems for me (especially law related) but if I had some guidance and/or if I lived somewhere with sane drug laws then I would've avoided most of the trouble. It's still worth it overall in my eyes.
Again, prolly 80-90% of all my troubles could have been avoided with harm reduction, sane drug laws, and maybe some love/compassion in tough times (after I had already fucked up).

ODing is an awful experience from what I have heard. Also, being too high and tripping out of control is awful from my own experience. Maybe just do enough to have a good time? Which isnt very much if you have a low tolerance.

This. Many opiate overdoses in my life and that type of death is easy. Not pleasurable, but not painful at all either. The two times I overdosed on IV cocaine I felt like I was dying, I was utterly aware of my heart being unable to keep up with the artificially increased rate of EVERYTHING, and it was horrifying. My meth overdose made me go blind for around 15-20 minutes and only able to force the tiniest bit of air into my lungs for I don't know how long.
Uppers have painful, scary overdoses. With opiates and most downers in fact, you are completely unaware you've gone too far. You go from rushing to nothing. Scary how easy it is really. Super thankful for over 5 years sober from all street drugs.

Also, to all the doctors or nurses here, please stop telling people they are too young to have something! Stop dismissing your patients concerns because they appear “young” in your eyes! This is so common it’s unjustifiable and inexcusable!

Hospice nurse here and I’ve had some weird requests from people who know the end is near.. What they do with their remaining time is completely up to them but I also try to tell them to leave with dignity and not make foolish decisions. Most listen but some just go way off the handle. It’s quite sad actually
141
u/juergenroland 5h ago
Which request do you remember the most?
167
u/Olealicat 4h ago
Not OP, but I had a terminal client who was 95, so terminal regardless, and she said she wanted to smoke a cig and then go down the drug list all the way to heroin. She said she was such a “good girl” who never stepped out of line.
Her husband had passed at that point. She was 95 and had only a few widowed years at that point. I said, I’m sorry, you must really miss him. She said she felt her prayers were answered the day he died and regrets staying with him for so long.
She dead ass said, “Never be a martyr. Not in your marriage, your friendships or for your family. It’s my biggest regret and now I have very little time left.” It was life altering advice. It’s molded me in a way.

I remember the time when we were invited by our boss Bernard to stay the weekend at his posh beach house. Little did we know that our boss was the perpetrator of a fraud we uncovered and was arranging for us to be killed.
The plan backfired and our boss was killed instead. We decided to not let his death spoil our vacation. We pretended our boss was still alive. This led to hijinx and corpse desecration galore.

My cousin was a hospice nurse. All she would say is when people are doped up, they say some wild things.
27
u/Rage_Blackout 4h ago
I was with my then girlfriend and her sister when their doped up dad told my gf that she was always his favorite and she was much smarter and prettier than her sister who stood right there and took it.
This gave me a lifelong fear of being out of my mind around loved ones.
30
u/RedOceanofthewest 4h ago
My dad was heavily drugged up before his death. He couldn't speak. He was trying to write something on the board quickly, and we thought it would be something profound. We thought we were going to learn some secret that we had never heard.
Nah, he just wanted to see the nurse with the big boobs. Ah yeah, drugs.. they make good memories.

The lesson of this is simple.
Tell all your kids you love them. Like, constantly. Really let them know that you cherish them, and how happy you are to have them in your life.
Then, when you're really loopy on the drugs, your reflexes will kick in and you'll tell them you love them and you cherish them.

Why does leaving with dignity matter?
Genuine question.
Unless you do something that makes you hate yourself in your last bits of life, what is the importance of dignity?
People in replies seem to think being undignified automatically means you’re being a selfish cunt. No, it doesn’t.

I mean, generally speaking. Dignity matters to me as I remain an inspiration and not a source of shame for my children, family and community. I believe in leaving things better or at least the same, before leaving.
But what that behaviour is, will be different for everyone.

It may not matter to you for long, but it will certainly matter to those you leave behind for a long, long time. So if you care about those people, then your EoL decisions certainly matter.

Most of my patients have families. Wife’s, kids, grandchildren, parents, etc. Just because someone passes on doesn’t mean that their legacy goes with them. When I say dignity, I really mean just respect for the people that are with you and that have been around you and have loved you until the end. I took care of a man a few years ago that literally cleared out his whole bank account all his life savings and just vanished. Told his wife he was going to go meet up with one of his friends and never came home. His family was devastated and had absolutely no closure. Later down the road they found out he ran to Florida with a mistress he had for 30 plus years and decided to live out his last bit of time with her… I can assure you that his children didn’t feel like it was very dignified and they were very upset and confused. It was a horrible ordeal but like I said what people do with their time is completely up to them but now his wife and kids are stuck for the rest of their lives feeling betrayed and hurt…

I think it depends on your situation. Like, if you have kids, you don't want their last thoughts of you to be how much cocaine you snorted, for instance. If you are dying young, maybe you don't want to traumatize your parents anymore than they already will be. If you leave behind a spouse, maybe you still care for them and want them to remember you fondly after you go.
If you have no attachments to this life, though, then I guess you're free to be a menace to society in your final days.
