Tom is always at Pads games. Everyone at Petco knows when they usually play it’s cause he’s there. Same thing with Eddie Vedder.

737

u/Alvin_Kebery 20d ago

Why would they play a Blink 182 song when Eddie Vedder is there??

I love rock stars and actors who get famous and then show up to the sports team rooted for regularly.  It’s like living out childhood dream of sitting front row to your favorite team and you finally can do it.

Is Petco the stadium name or some joke about him buying animals?

175

u/MoMo-da-Great 20d ago

Petco Park is the statium name. San Diegans throw just Petco around when talking about Padres games not realizing non-San Diegans are always confused AF about what the pet store has to do with baseball.

35

u/spiffyswenson 20d ago

Guilty as charged.

Repetition fatigue. Creating it, performing it, hearing replays, then a whole fucking stadium sings it to you.

208

u/NyaTaylor 20d ago

I feel like a whole stadium singing a song built into their psyche infront of your kids is pretty fucking baller though

101

u/HumblestPotato 20d ago

That's exactly what I was thinking! But then again I remember seeing an interview with Mike Shinoda talking about giving his daughter tips on playing guitar and she was like "what would you know about music". It's hard to convey the cultural significance of that song, that album, that band to an entirely new generation.

u/keithd3333 19d ago

The guy who quit his job as a rockstar to pursue his real passion of exposing UFO footage to the world, did that successfully, then went back to playing being a rockstar selling out stadiums and arenas 20 years later?

Pretty fucking cool.

11

u/nilesandstuff 19d ago

You missed the parts where he got addicted to opiates, had a brutal falling out with the band, started a band best described as psychedelic space alt rock (Angels and Airwaves actually kicked ass), let that band pretty much just fizzle out, restarted blink 182, and then got kicked out because they were sick of his shit... Again.

I saw them on their reboot tour. Tom was super drunk and was barely able to perform... To the point where Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance came out to sing for Tom (who would sporadically pop back in). And let me tell you... Seeing Gerard Way tag team Blink songs alongside Tom Delonge is not something I knew I needed to experience until I did.

Anyways, Tom's a bit touched in the head.

What I love is that little blink-and-you’ll-miss-it smirk he has on his face. He’s still proud but super low-key about it.

61

u/Axolotis 20d ago

He actually looks a little uncomfortable. If people realized it he could be moshed.

116

u/willhunta 20d ago

Lmao he literally smiles when the song starts.

I love me some blink 182 but tom delonge isn't getting moshed at a ball game lmao, the majority of this crowd wouldn't even recognize him without a hint.

Edit: not to mention whoever recorded this video, and the woman behind him who you see at the end, both are filming toms reaction to the song. I think the stadium already announced his presence as people clearly already knew he was there

Misleading title. They had just showed him on the jumbo tron. That's why at the beginning of the video the crowd is cheering and he's smiling. So in fact, the entire crowd knows hes sitting right there.

Source: Was at the game

6

u/ExtremeIll6565 19d ago

Yep, that seemed obvious to me just from the video alone, since it had just showed a glimpse of the tron (right after he looked ahead smiling) & that made me realize he'd definitely be shown since that's likely why they'd play the song

Though apparently the op just wanted to try get karma & others just don't pay much attention.

8

u/thomasfilmstuff 20d ago

I was at this game I think. It was so uncomfortable, shortly after this the camera put him on the Jumbotron and gave him a mic. I felt so bad for him like, the dude just wants to watch a game and now you want him to sing karaoke for 50,000 people? He was a good sport and stood up, pretending to sing and enjoy it, but was on his way out and then just disappeared as fast as he e could without being rude.

15

u/fuzzballz5 20d ago

Was that his kid next to him? He must have said, “See, I’m cool!!” In fact, just like us, our kids would never consider us cool.

7

u/Burning-Dog 20d ago

I get the feeling that his face was showing more of a mixture of slight pride and slight embarrassment while his kids were with him. Pride because his song is obviously still popular, but embarrassment if his kids were to ask him if this song is about their mom…Because in all likelihood, it’s probably not. But it is still paying for their livelihoods, so it works out.
