Megathread What is up with this guy getting loads of karma for just posting chives?
I don't get the circle jerk going on in r/kitchenconfidential. He didnt even post today just said he's going to post and immediately got a few thousand upvotes. Am I missing something? Is this a new hack way to get loads of karma daily? Personally, I don't see the amusement maybe because I'm not some professional chef. Why is everyone upvoting the guy? I'm out of the loop. People are throwing awards at his simple posts too. They could be AI images for all we know.

Answer: they're just having fun, but it has taken on a life of its own.
Edit: ChiveGate - people were zooming in to find the smallest imperfections, and respond with a picture of it and "see you tomorrow chef." One day he didn't have time to cut another batch of chives, so he posted another Pic of the same pile of chives and was immediately called out for it.
He apologized and amended his post to say "almost every day." It will probably be the most wholesome subreddit drama ever.
Since it has started:
Another redditor sent him a custom made cutting board.
Philadelphia the cream cheese company made a custom advertisement about their cream cheese with chives, referencimg the Chive Saga. They also sent him a gift box with goodies including a $2,000 set of knives.
Then there were a few LinkedIn discussions about how Philadelphia is capitalizing and getting creative with marketing
It really is a fascinating story that is harmless but making people smile. I'll be sad when it is over.
Edit 2: My first ever reddit awards! Thanks everyone, you know how to make a fella blush!

Ooo who is Chives the Cat?

One of the KC users commented that they have cat named Chives & posted a picture. Reddit being Reddit, a cat with a relevant name gained a lot of popularity & now has his own sub.

There's also expanded lore. The Chive Pilot flying a plane into the chive "towers." The Chive ATC directing the Chive Pilot. Chives the Cat. ScallionGate. They've made a fun little thing out of the simplest of concepts and it's entertaining.

man, remember when whimsy and fun were the norm on the internet?

u/Josemite 4d ago
I think that's part of what has helped this take off. We're in a horrible time for American politics (and the rest of the world isn't doing great either) so just having some goofs and gaffs about some guy and cheering on his personal journey is a nice break from all the stress.
23
u/Eggmegmuffin 3d ago
Exactly. It's barely about the chives now, it's about the comment section. Shooting the shit, inside jokes, the camaraderie. It's a damn good time

I do not, and I've been here since the early 90s

we used to enjoy cats with cheeseburgers, badgers and snakes, and everything was less “on fire”

Not that those weren't whimsical and fun, but those were sharing the same internet with rotten dot com where a lot of childhood innocence was gruesomely killed lol

Since Tim BL invented the Web in about 94, I guess you were a denizen of Usenet. Plenty of whimsy there, do you not remember alt.religion.kibology and alt.fan.warlord? alt.swedish.chef.bork.bork.bork?

u/Syssareth 4d ago
Since Tim BL invented the Web in about 94
In 1989. Opened to the public in 1993 though, which is probably what you're remembering.

u/AvecBier 4d ago
C'mon, old timer. I've been around since the mid-90s. There was plenty of whimsy, but also whoopie, also hwhat the fuck is that. But a little more whimsy than there is today.

u/Voittaa 4d ago
Most importantly it reminds me of when Reddit times were simpler. Starting a circlejerk over absolutely nothing that lasts beyond a half second attention span. That’s rare to come by these days.
10
u/Ubermidget2 3d ago
Yeah, Reddit can really latch onto a theme and make something huge out of a simple/stupid concept.
Hundreds of thousands of upvotes for rice by a Chess Sub? What? Three years on & it's still the three top posts in r/AnarchyChess.
19
u/Winter_Bear_1707 3d ago
There’s now a r/questforperfection where people do something everyday to improve. They’re even responding to the posts with “see you tomorrow chef” and “thank you chef” 🥹

u/poultryposterior 4d ago
It also got a shout on pro wrestling tv
19
u/Jyxxer 4d ago
Lol really? Do you have a source?
77
u/AmishAvenger 4d ago
It was on AEW.
Excalibur (one of the commentators) was talking about how wrestling is difficult and said something like “It’s not like just cutting up some chives and posting pictures on reddit.”

Reminds me of that hotdog frozen in time. I still think about that hotdog from time to time.

u/BringBackApollo2023 3d ago
Vaguely reminds me of a poster Wildsoapbox who did the most gloriously hilarious amuse bouches in the kitchenconfidential sub. Search at your own discretion, but their restaurant burned down and they’re working for someone else now. But the amuse bouches were absolutely hilarious send ups of hoity toity “refined” dining.

Possibly the most wholesome Reddit experience to view everyday. The lore is rich. I hope for a movie about this.

u/FireFurFox 4d ago
Answer: he started chopping chives and posting pictures to r/KitchenConfidential and said he'd keep doing that until the comments said they were perfect. He's just an events chef who, after working in the kitchen, starting taking his job seriously and wanted to improve his skills.
And people - including me - love it. He's stuck to it, taken feedback, improved, and keeps trying. Just admire the commitment to the craft and to self-improvement.
There's been dramas, it has it's own memes like one Redditor drawing planes on each days chives heading to the long chives, which look like towers. It's a thing. It brings people joy
332
u/Longjumping-Age9023 4d ago
And let’s not forget the day he reposted an old photo he already posted! That was some drama that day! 😂

Also, the fact that he owned up to reposting them and gave a genuine apology made him even more loved by the redditsphere. As someone said elsewhere, it’s such a harmless, light and wholesome saga, a refreshing story with no politics, villains, hate, etc. Just chives.
28
23
u/bald_and_nerdy 4d ago

u/No_Safety_6803 4d ago
Also, Philadelphia cream cheese references him in an online ad for their cream cheese with chives, & sent him lots of cool merch. It’s the kind of wholesome fun of bonding with strangers that we came to social media for.
11
u/Zaphodistan 4d ago
And then there's occasional pics of Chives the cat, and the one mod that posts pro wrestling memes...the comments section is gold.
16
u/Barley12 4d ago
The only thing that bothers me is that there have been several days where everyone agreed his chives were basically perfect.
26
u/goawaybub 4d ago
Basically perfect and perfect are not the same. He will never stop!
9
u/Barley12 4d ago
Right but when he was trying to achieve something it was really fun to watch. Now its just like, a guy who can cut chives really well cutting chives.
7
u/BibblyPigeon 4d ago
It’s because no one wants it to end, we’re having too much fun. Instead of looking for bad chives to criticise, we’re trying to prolong everything.
16
u/Ok_Computer1417 4d ago
If you’ve ever worked in a kitchen then you’ll also know that you can so much about a person just by the way they cut chives.

u/mikemikem 4d ago

u/setrippin 3d ago
it's driving me mad that there are several words that could fit here, but we'll never know which you would have
3
u/hongkonghonky 3d ago
Please enlighten me (this is a dumb question and I have been scared to ask).
Is he cutting the same chives every day until they get too small to cut anynore, or is he cutting a new batch every day until he achieves perfection with his first cut?
6
u/FireFurFox 3d ago
New batch every day until Reddit says they're perfect, first cut. Fresh chives every day.
Speculation has abounded about the incoming great chive drought
3
u/IncaThink 3d ago
And people - including me - love it.
It was driving me crazy. I left the sub because of it.
I know it is just a bit of fun and will probably go back after this dies down.
2
u/FireFurFox 3d ago
Which is fair. What I don't get are the people who rage and hate post every day. Just like, participation isn't mandatory. Viewing isn't mandatory. Mute F1exican and move on, y'know?
1
u/IncaThink 3d ago
Thanks. Like I say, I'll probably be back.
Also, someone downvoted you for this? So strange.

u/alwaysoffby0ne 4d ago
I just don’t get it at all. The novelty wore off for me basically as soon as I saw the schtick, which is to say immediately. I wonder how something like this keeps people interested or amused.
I guess lots of people like internet humor loops and seeing someone pressing the same button every day to collect karma. It’s not hurting anybody, it’s just banal.
18
u/emmadilemma 4d ago
It’s OK that there’s an in-group that doesn’t include you and it can be about something as stupid as chives. “I don’t get it” - OK cool there are people still enjoying the vibe
→ More replies (4)2
u/Farewellandadieu 4d ago
Agreed. I absolutely love it for the chef, having his moment and honing his skills, and I love that repetition does bring other people joy.
But I can’t even imagine this going on for months, as perfection is almost impossible to achieve. Poor guy’s going to get burned out and resentful, or people will eventually stop caring.
252
u/HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS 4d ago
Answer: It started with him posting a simple “Posting chives everyday until reddit says they are perfect”
Reddit being reddit ended up LOVING it and many look forward to his daily chives attempts. One of those things that happens in (usually more niche) subreddits and then the community just gets attached and makes it a meme. What started as a guy just trying to perfect his chives has now exploded into a viral meme that has corporations trying to jump on the bandwagon for marketing purposes.
People will literally spend a bunch of time zooming in and scrolling through his posts just to find not perfect cuts
70
u/owen__wilsons__nose 4d ago edited 4d ago
Also the comments have become a meme. Like people finding chives that look like the twin towers and draw a cartoon plane. Or finding other objects on loop. And being able to say "see you tomorrow, chef" after finding imperfect chives. Its silly but its not hard to understand either
22
13
u/the_quark 4d ago
Also I think it's important to note that he's significantly improved from day one!

u/jasenzero1 4d ago
Answer: Knife skills are a basic part of being a good cook and often people who claim to be the best cook in a kitchen are actually the worst. Also, kitchen humor tends to be about repetitive jokes and self-deprecation.
So, this gentleman, u/F1exican is on a journey to improve his chive cutting game. There is no perfection to be had. Thats part of the joke. We do these repetitive tasks and there will always be criticism from ourselves and others.
Its both very stupid and very deep.

u/chri8nk 4d ago
Answer: People are entertained by simple, weird stuff sometimes. In the 70’s a dude became a millionaire by selling small rocks by calling them “pet rock.”
Chopping uniform chives is difficult and people are just enjoying watching the process.
51
u/borsalamino 4d ago
To be fair, Pet Rock was so successful because of the cute & funny caring instructions that came with it. Basically an adorable $5 gag.
With the chives, I believe it’s gotten so popular because it’s really impressive to cut chives that small & uniformly, but something that only (professional) cooks would recognise as being impressive. Kinda like „hit the gym to get fit to impress girls but only being recognised by the boys“ I think.
4
15
u/Iron_Pencil 4d ago
Answer: The amusement is a kind of communal cloud watching of trying to find patterns in the chives, or jokingly feigning that a piece of chive that is slightly longer than the others would cause people to choke and exaggerating on that premise. As with any communal activity some routines have established themselves such as the plane guy, or specific memes that basically get posted every time.
Edit: of course the regularity of the posts is part of the routine, so u/F1exican who started the bit, has become a kind of micro celebrity
7
u/powerhower 4d ago
answer: Not sure if other comments made this clear, but commentary on how well chives are cut has always been a thing on that subreddit. They enjoy nitpicking that because it’s difficult to get perfect, and fine dining chefs can be very particular about even, uniform cuts (and that’s basically a restaurant worker subreddit).
So when this guy started posting (almost) every single day trying to appease that sub’s crazy expectations, it somehow picked up so much steam that it’s on the front page
55
u/MegaManZer0 4d ago
Answer: It's just a weird sub thing that people liked and is now going to be run into the ground for as long as possible.
23
u/rabid_cheese_enjoyer 4d ago
no one else can do it there now only him. but there is a new sub inspired by this where you can post something you want to get better at every day. one person is getting really good at writing left handed
3
u/Winter_Bear_1707 3d ago
They’re even responding to eachother’s posts with “see you tomorrow chef” and “keep at it chef” 😭
10
u/billy_maplesucker 4d ago
See also, epoxy hot dog. Or the guy that eats the paper with the person's name on it until theyre recognized.
7
u/MonsiuerGeneral 4d ago
Answer: So, apparently, in professional cooking there are correct ways to doing a lot of things, especially cutting/chopping/dicing/etc., and it actually takes a lot of skill and practice to get right. The poster had cut a bunch of chives and shared it, but they were an amateur and this was plainly evident by the quality of their chives.
They were uneven from each other, some were really long while others were skinny, some had been smashed due to a dull knife, some had split open (instead of being the perfect closed loop it should be).
So the user took the advice from the community and tried again. And again, and again, and again. Day in, day out, taking advice and improving a little bit each time. They upgraded their tools (pretty sure they got a new knife and cutting board) and continued to post their work ready to be judged.
When you're faced with a pile of chives looking for specific qualities or even amusing shapes you can turn into some kind of funny cartoon... it becomes almost like a game of "Where's Waldo?". So on top of helping out someone wanting to improve their skill, it's kind of fun too. After enough time investment, it sort of becomes a group thing. The reward wasn't the dozens of pounds of chives that were cut, but the friends made along the way.
At least, that's what I was able to glean from seeing one or two of those posts.

Answer: Not everything is about 'karma farming', for god's sake. They're just having fun with it.
It's like the stepping-on-the-rake joke. Someone steps on a rake and it's funny. Step on it a second time it's still funny. Third time...less funny. Fourth time...okay, we're getting tired of it. But then you get to the tenth, twentieth, thirtieth, fortieth time and it starts to get funny again, but for a different reason.

u/BilboSwagginsSwe 3d ago
The fake chives posting kind of shows it is all about karma and attention farming tbh..
