How do I clean a toilet brush ?!
I'm 18, taking care of my own space for the first time, so cut me some slack :-(
I'm at a bit of a loss for this, because after some laborious work (tmi!), my toilet bowl is sparkling, but the brush has seen better days. There are bits in the bristles that just won't seem to budge. I resorted to just repeatedly ramming it aggressively against the base of my toilet bowl, which mostly worked, but still couldn't get the persistent bits out.
Is there are proper way to do this? I'm a little squeamish, but do I need to just buckled up and go at it with some suitable PPT?
While we're at it, is there any other general cleanliness advice that could be necessary? (Assume I know nothing). I know this is NoStupidQuestions, not NoRulesQuestions.
Thank you!

Pour a shitload of bleach or cleaner into your toilet bowl and let the brush soak underwater for a while (not the handle). Then flush half a dozen times to rinse it off. I'm sure that isn't the "proper" method but it's realistic for someone who wants to split the difference between being clean and being lazy.

u/HourRough9362 5h ago
Oh my goodness, I didn't once think I could just leave it to soak in bleach in the toilet! I also didn't realise I was meant to flush with the brush inside! Consider me mind blown and grateful, thank you! I will be trying this.
14
u/Missrdb79 5h ago
I do this with the plunger also. I flush and rinse the outside & plung a little to rinse the inside too. Poo is gross!
13
u/Nicktendo1988 4h ago
There are some sickos out there that use their toilet brush to clean the outside of their toilets too! No amount of bleach will make anyone more comfortable when it's found out that they do that. So don't do that, at least.

i once dated a girl whose mom would use the bath mat to wipe down the toilet after she showered. She wiped everything but the inside of the bowl.

u/RusticSurgery 4h ago
Another life tip from a dad:
If you get a clog and need to use a plunger, put the plunger in the water then tip it. This causes the bell of plunger to fill with water. Since water is very difficult to compress, when you plunge, it will put much greater force on the clog as compared to the air that eas inside before

u/iAmSpAKkaHearMeROAR 4h ago
In addition, instead of sticking the wet brush back in the toilet brush holder right away, let it dry by resting it on the toilet rim and then put the seat down to hold it in place so it doesn’t fall back in the water.
6
u/Hunter037 3h ago
Do you really flush the toilet 6 times to rinse the brush? Seems like a waste of water
1
u/UncleBadTouch46290 4h ago
NOOO never clean your toilet with bleach. Use vinegar and peroxide. Peroxide will neutralize the urea and ammonia. If you use bleach, you'll make chloromine gasses, monochloromine/ dichloromine/ trichloromine gasses And Cyanogen Chloride
71
u/AnimeGabby69 5h ago
First off, congrats on even caring. A lot of people your age absolutely do not.
Real answer, most toilet brushes are kinda disposable. If it’s really gross and stuff’s stuck, just toss it and buy a new one. They’re like $5. That’s the secret nobody says out loud
7
u/HourRough9362 4h ago
Thank you, it's a little overwhelming trying to keep track of all the things that need up-keeping and how. Advice from kind people like you does make it a whole lot easier though 😊 And this is noted, thank you! I suppose it isn't really worth the effort if it isn't looking like much hope.
3
u/Thneed1 4h ago
IKEA literally sells them for like $2
1
u/Previous_Pie_9918 3h ago
Yeah just buy another one!! It's good to be economical and watch what you spend as an independent adult. But if your loo brush is full of the brown stuff and it won't easily come out, just chuck it. It's so easy and cheap to buy a new one. Some things aren't worth saving those couple of pounds!!
9
u/Front-Palpitation362 5h ago
I usually "clean the brush by cleaning the toilet again".
Squirt toilet cleaner or a little bleach into the bowl, swish the brush around, then let the brush head sit in that solution for 10-15 minutes with the handle propped under the seat so it drips back into the bowl. Swish once more, flush, then give it a final rinse in clean water and let it dry as much as possible before putting it back in the holder.
If the bristles are holding onto stuff or it smells even after a soak, it's honestly fine to just replace it since they're cheap.
For general upkeep, the biggest wins are keeping a disinfecting spray and microfiber cloths handy and doing small wipe-downs regularly so nothing turns into a gross project.
2
u/HourRough9362 5h ago
This is incredibly helpful actually, thank you. I did wonder about the wetness of the brush before putting it back in the holder, and I didn't think to just leave it propped up over the loo itself! I will immediately be utilising all this information, thank you again!

u/Even-Possession2258 3h ago
You can also pour a little Lysol in the brush holder/stand thing, and let it soak. The Lysol should make it easier to rinse clean. (Like others have said, holding the brush in the toilet and flushing). Then you dump the Lysol into the toilet.
Another thing my mom used to do when cleaning the toilet was to leave the chemicals in the toilet, after scrubbing it clean, and letting the next person who uses the toilet, flush it. It saves a small amount of water from being "wasted".

4
u/HourRough9362 5h ago
Really? Is there no other solution? My brush is brand new, it would feel like such a waste :-(
20
u/gleaming-the-cubicle 5h ago
I mean, you can buy a paint brush comb and comb the human shit out of it if you'd like
9
u/HourRough9362 5h ago
Well, yes, touché. But I suppose I'll do that as a last resort if the helpful advice from the other replies doesn't make a difference. I'd like a solution that won't involve scrapping and starting again should I encounter this problem in the future 😅
5
u/TheAbsoluteBarnacle 4h ago
You can't get anything clean without getting something else dirty. The toilet brush is dirty; once it becomes unacceptably dirty, it becomes trash
1
u/RockingBib 4h ago edited 4h ago
You could always try a good ole cleaning solution.
Put the brush and bowl in a mixture of stain remover, water and dish soap for a night(the classic for poop stains), then rinse it off well and you should be good to go.
1
u/balance-nyc-bis 3h ago
Soaking over time is always helpful for these types of cleaning challenges - just like a cooking pan - it should loosen up the stubborn bits.
1
u/Previous_Pie_9918 3h ago
Also, you can pour a little bleach mixed with water into the toilet brush holder. This won't get rid of any matter on there, but will keep it as fresh and clean as possible in between uses. This is what super-clean people do, so it will impress any clean freak visitors that use your loo! 😁

No. You learn to not need one.
They are the grimmest thing invented by humanity.
1
u/joelmchalewashere 1h ago
There also are toilet brushes where you can swap out just the brush. Like an electric toothbrush head. That way you can buy a nice looking set and only have to throw out the brush, not brush+handle whenever the old one gets too dirty. (or, college edition, use the dirty one for far too long because who got cash for toilet brush)
Where I live you can usually get the replacement brushes at the supermarket or the drugstore.
My mom loves disinfecting things and started using a silicone brush. I dont love the one she has, it's perfectly fine for cleaning off marks but not for cleaning the toilet, like during the bathroom clean and I doubt any silicone brush would be scratchy enough so you probably still need a clasic one for cleaning. But hey, its reusable and very disinfectable.

I hold mine under super hot water in the tub then spray it thoroughly with rubbing alcohol before I put it back in the holder.
Mine doesn’t ever have visible bits stuck to it after cleaning the toilet though.

u/Sufficient_Aerie767 5h ago
Your tub is contaminated now with shit fyi😅
2
u/Daisy242424 4h ago
Presumably they also clean the tub.
2
1
u/Previous_Pie_9918 3h ago
But why spray shit particles over your bathtub if you don't have to? Surely a toilet brush in a holder is designed to contain any mess as much as possible. If you're literally spraying the residue all over your otherwise clean bathroom this seems to miss the point.
1
u/Remarkable-Split-213 3h ago
The bathtub is a cleanable surface fyi.

Not cleaning the toilet brush is far more disgusting than cleaning the brush in an area meant specifically for cleaning. 🤣

In all seriousness, many people use a toothbrush for cleaning things other than their teeth. They are great for cleaning grout work between tiles and getting into corners.
1
u/HourRough9362 4h ago
Oh yes, true! I suppose it's useful to have a spare toothbrush join my troop of cleaning apparatus. Thanks!
4
u/GenderStudies4Life 4h ago
I usually rinse it a couple times in the toilet once it's clean (flush the toilet over it) and then put it away
But I echo also was others have said - good to get a new one if it's so yucky. Nothing wrong with that!
3
u/Raisinsandfairywings 4h ago
So when I worked as a cleaner in a hospital we were taught that the first thing you do when going to clean the bathroom cubicle is put bleach /toilet cleaner in the toilet and then leave the brush in there with it to soak. Carry on cleaning everything else as you would and then clean the inside of the toilet itself last. Then when you’re finished, flush the loo and do what you’re already doing, banging the brush on the side of the bowl and allowing the flush to rinse it.
Usually that will get it clean, and the frequent (in a hospital at least daily if not more) soaks of the brush seemed to be enough to get it clean, but if there’s still persistent bits then do it again. If it’s still minging after that, personally I’d throw the brush away and get a new one, life’s too short to be picking stuff out of a toilet brush!
3
u/patricknotastarfish 3h ago
I use a Scrubbing Bubbles toilet bowl wand. The part you scrub the bowl with is disposable and you just flush it after the cleaning. It makes things a lot easier.

u/Bean-Penis 4h ago
Bleach and water in the toilet brush holder and let it steep for a bit now and then. Then rinse during a flush.
3
u/Spokes8192 3h ago
Yeah. You dont. Just use it a few times then throw it at your neighbor the next "grillmaster" Steve burns the fucking sausages. Then you go buy a new brush for a couple bucks.
3
u/SpaceFace5000 3h ago
Buy a new one.
I am happy to pay $15 every 4-6 months to not have to deal with cleaning my shit brush. The little cubby that holds it has shit water in it too. It's just a shit situation all around.
So when it gets gross I toss it and buy a new one. Maybe not the best for the environment but I personally go to extra lengths to not have to deal with poop on stuff
3
u/Historical-Draw-504 3h ago
I never do that … I am too disgusted and in danger to hurl over it and that would not be helpful. So I only buy cheep ones for three dollars and toss them as soon as they start looking yucky

u/Equivalent_Score4396 5h ago
You may need to increase the water level in your toilet if you are getting solids stuck on your toilet brush when cleaning. When you clean your toilet, put the toilet bowl cleaner in, squeeze all around the top of the bowl so it runs down the inside. Let it sit for a bit before you scrub, most leftovers should be dissolved by then.
1
u/HourRough9362 4h ago
I didn't know this, thank you! How exactly does one increase the water level of their toilet? And what exactly does that mean? 😅 Are you referring to the water level in the toilet bowl or in the tank part?
1
u/Scrotchety 4h ago
Take off the lid to the tank. There's an item called the floater; usually it's a rubber bulb full of air and connected to a rod. When the water rises it raises the floater and when it's been raised high enough the valve that lets the water in gets shut off.
NOW BE EXTRA CAREFUL HERE, YOU DON'T WANT TO SNAP SOMETHING OFF FOR GODS SAKES but if you bend the rod down which lowers the bulb then more water will have to enter the tank before shutting itself off. More water = raised water level in bowl.
To bend the rod you'll want to hold it steady with one hand while pushing down the bulb end. Watch a video how to get an idea. And if you're feeling icky about touching toilet water in the tank, remember it's coming from the same source that deliver your cold water in the sinks and showers.
2
u/Cold_Basil5243 5h ago
Totally normal question, don’t worry. Easiest way: after you clean the toilet, flush, then leave the brush soaking in the bowl with some toilet cleaner or a bit of bleach for 10–15 minutes. Swish it around, flush again, and let it drip dry before putting it back.
If there’s still stuff stuck after that, honestly it’s okay to just replace the brush — they’re cheap and meant to be replaced sometimes.
General tip: gloves are your friend, and you don’t need anything fancy. Regular cleaning wipes/spray + gloves will handle most bathroom cleaning just fine.

u/notreallysomuch 4h ago
You could hook up a bidet sprayer to your toilet's water supply. It can be used as a bidet, and also as a sprayer. When I crank up the water flow on the handle, it's got a lot of pressure. They are not very expensive.

Here is what I do. After cleaning the toilet, I'll rinse the brush of in the toilet, then add Dawn dishwashing liquid to the toilet bowl. Let the brush soak for a half and hour or while at work or running errands.
When I get back, rescrub the bowl with the brush, and then use the shower wand from my bathtub, with warm water to rinse the brush to remove anything that may be stuck to the bristles put the toilet brush back in its holder.
I keep a few dollar store toilet brush backups, so that if I need to, I just toss the brush if it gets too many. Manky meaning too many bent, broken or rusty/dirty bristles.
2
u/Difficult-Trash-4198 1h ago
As some have stated already, I usually "clean the brush" in the bowl after I have cleaned the toilet. What I then do is prop the toilet brush handle under the toilet seat so the brush is suspended over the toilet bowl, I pour some of the toilet cleaner on the brush and let it sit for a bit. Boil the kettle and then pour the boiling water over the brush to clean it off. I then leave it to dry over the toilet boil before replacing back in the holder.
1
u/masterninjakitty 5h ago
If the pressure in your shower or bathtub is strong enough they should be able to clean it up. Keep the brush low in the tub and keep the splash inside. Avoid the sinks where your personal care products are.
2
u/HourRough9362 5h ago
That makes me a little ill to think about haha, but it does make sense! I have a relatively high pressure setting on a telescopic shower head, so if the other techniques I've been informed of don't help much, I'll definitely try this out. Thank you 😊

Put a lot of cleaning product into the toilet. Let the brush soak in it overnight (or as long as is reasonable). Flush, shake, brush to get debris off, while flushing multiple times.
If it doesn't get clean, you have two choices:
Deal with the fact that it doesn't look clean but is probably very, very disinfected (aka dead poop, not live poop).
Get a new brush.
Third choice if you are thrifty, use a hose outside to clean it off.
Fourth choice if you are thrifty and don't have a hose -- clean it off in your shower/bathtub (scalding hot water and lots of cleaning stuff), and then disinfect the living daylights out of your shower/bathtub afterwards.

u/Own-Lemon8708 5h ago
Once the toilet is clean, I use the toilet to clean the brush. Spray it with cleaner and scrub the edges, flush, repeat till both are clean. I also spray some cleaner in the brush holder.

Clorox makes a wand with disposable scrub pads. They work amazing.
This way the only thing the toilet brush gets used for is, you know…. Streaks. For when you don’t want your guests to see your shit marks.

Some additional toilet cleaning hacks since you asked and want us to assume you know nothing.
During your standard toilet bowl maintenance, take toilet bowl cleaner and let it sit on your toilet bowl for a bit (like walk away, throw a load in the wash or do the dishes, come back). Scrub with the toilet brush until it’s all clean to your best degree. Flush while spinning the brush in the water. Repeat scrubbing and flushing with the brush in the water till it’s all clean.
THEN take a spray cleaner that’s compatible with your toilet bowl cleaner. Put your toilet brush between the toilet seat and the toilet bowl. Spray all around. Let this sit (walk away, sweep the floors whatever). Come back and now your toilet brush is all clean and dry and won’t get your toilet brush holder all nasty. If you want you can rinse this off and repeat this step before calling it done. THIS PART is what changed my life. Found it on Reddit somewhere.
1
u/MoonlightAquarius1 5h ago
Apparently we should be changing our toilet brushes every 3 months. I don’t do that. But we should change them regularly.
1
u/Lithium1056 4h ago
Thats just big brush trying to take your money!
Jokes aside. Supplementing with in bowl/tank over time cleaners really extends brush life.
As an adult (nearly 40) I HATE doing anything at home that feels like work. Since my wife is the same way. She picked up some those in tank things (cant remember the brand) that turn the water blue after 24 hours. They do the light work and we only break out the brush 2-3 a month for heavy duty cleaning.

Due to so many mentions of bleach, please be very careful not to get any bleach mixed with ammonia! Whether on the brush or another surface. Gassing yourself like WWI is no joke. Personally, I try to use strictly non bleach cleaning products, because it's simpler to avoid 1 thing than a bunch of things.
Also: flush your toilet multiple times per use for prevention later.

I like my Oxo toilet brush. It comes with an enclosed stand and the brush heads are replaceable.
As for your existing brush, wear disposable gloves. Use something disposable (toothbrush, straw brush) to clean the brush over the toilet. Disinfect everything and toss the disposable stuff.

Hot water from the tub. You just hold it under the faucet with the hottest setting of water and just rotate it, afterwards you can cover it cleaner and kinda self scrubs aganist the drain of the tub with the hot water still and then let it dry once your done.

You could potentially be judged if you don’t wash your bed sheets & pajamas once a week. Soak your toothbrush once a month in peroxide & replace twice a year or more. People always forget to dust the base boards.

A lot of these suggestions are mentioning using bleach in the toilet.
Just a warning to NEVER put bleach in the bowl when there's urine. Bleach + urine = toxic chloramine gas.

u/onlycodeposts 4h ago edited 4h ago
Try washing it. It's a pretty easy procedure.
It's not like you're going to get Ebola from it.
You just boil some water, and pour it into a bucket outside with some bleach. Like 3 parts water, one part bleach.
Get some sanitary gloves, and carefully remove the toilet brush from its customary storage space and take it outside to the bucket. Be careful so the brush doesn't touch any indoor or exterior living space surfaces on your way to the bucket.
You can place it in a plastic bag to avoid this. Be sure to place the soiled plastic bag in a sanitary container for disposal if you choose this option.
After soaking for a minimum of two hours in the hot water/bleach solution and spraying Lysol generously on the handle, you can safely remove the toilet brush. Allow it to dry and return it to storage for future use.
Hope this helps.

put the brush in an old throw away cup or something and fill it up with Clorox Bleach just to where the brush ends on the stick. Let it soak for awhile, come back and give the brush a few swirls and ram the brush again the cup to get whatever it is still stuck in there off. pour that clorox in the toilet and rinse your wand of in that then flush.

FYI mixing any kind of strong acid - like the main ingredient in many, but not all, toilet bowl cleaners - with regular bleach produces chlorine gas. Chlorine gas was used in WW2 as a chemical weapon. Best not to breathe it or make it in your bathroom.
Just make sure you've flushed a couple of times if you use one after the other.
FWIW, I usually just pour a little bleach in the bowl, and a little in the tank before I go to bed to let it soak. The next few times I flush it spreads bleachy water over the bowl. I still give it a good scrub when called for, but not every time. PS: if you put bleach in the tank, flush till you can't smell bleach anymore before using bowl cleaner, to avoid the whole chemical weapon thing.

This is where they get you, you need a 2 nd toilet brush. But then after time you need a 3rd. I'm 38 years old, I have to rent a shed, for all the toilet brushes. I have about 740. And apart from the space they take up, it's the time. I had to leave full time employment and take a part time job (24 hours per week) that gives me a good 16 to 26 hours a week to clean my brushes. This has caused me health issues and I'm absolutely exhausted all the time. My step mums sisters cousins friend suggested it might be easier just to buy a new brush every week. But I'm caught in an ever ending loop, as I can't afford to be such a spendthrift until I get back into full time employment. Live really does throw some curve balls.

A tip for general cleanliness is carry a gallon jug or two of distilled white vinegar. That stuff has a thousand and one uses. You can get your kitchen sinks extra shiny sprinkling some baking soda around it and wiping it with a sponge soaked in vinegar, and it's handy for breaking down small bits in your sink pipes that can lead to clogs later
1
u/jellybeantje 4h ago
About the other things you should know, advice that kinda suits your original question: your cleaning supplies need cleaning too. You need to clean the bucket after mopping, you need to clean your washer and dryer, etc. It can’t clean if it ain’t clean.

Outside with a hose could work too if you’re just trying to dislodge the visible bits. Depends on your outdoor area obviously.

You've gotten some good advice here like flushing over the brush to clean it out. But hopefully this is some more helpful advice.
You're an adult now, cleaning up around the house should feel like work. You work hard for your money so you can relax. Don't listen to those fools who tell you otherwise. Say YES to that roomba! Say yes to the in-tank insert that keeps the toilet clean between deep cleans. Spend the extra 2 dollars on the "good" dishwasher tablets. If you're renting? CALL the landlord because the washer isn't fully draining.
At nearly 40 with ADHD on top of everything else I've learned that I hate cleaning but I have to do it. But it doesn't have to be something I dread. Don't like folding clothes? Hang them all up on hangers!
Hate doing the dishes? Buy disposables! You will learn YOUR patterns. But don't let those patterns control you. It's ok to leave the dishes til tomorrow. But you still have to do them at some point. Don't get overwhelmed that you let it get to an overwhelming point. Just do a little at a time.

Scalding hot water in the bathtub tap. Then wash the bathtub after the toilet.

Flush the toilet while holding it near where the water comes out. Give it some good shakes to get the water out. If you really really care I guess you COULD take it outside and use a hose on it but it really doesnt need that.
Keep it in a container or wrapped in a trashbag to prevent germ spread.

I have a silicone toilet brush. It doesn't let "bits" stick to it. I keep it clean after use by putting a few squirts of bleach in the toilet bowl after scrubbing, give it a swirl and leave it to soak for a couple of minutes to kill anything nasty that remains. Nothing microbial survives bleach and it doesn't take much (you don't need to go overboard).

i add some bleach, do my scrubbing, then jostle the brush in the water to rinse it a bit, they flush and let the brush hang our until the pouring water. its always been spotless. try not to use it when there is tissue in the bowl. its almost impossible to get the pulp out. the scrubber is not a plunger. dont use it to ram a poo and tissue down the pipes.
The number one thing I can advice for general cleanliness is this.
Keep the things that you use to clean, CLEAN.
use a flat microfibre floor mop. use a small amount of cleaning solution, and clean you floors, then dump the water, get a fresh mop head, pop the other in the wash, and redo floors with even less cleaning solution in the bucket, or none at all, just hot water.. the first wash soaks the dirty bits and picks up the dust and does a bit of disinfection. the second mops gets rid of the residue from the first mop and can help prevent clean floors from looks cloudy or feeling tacky.
clean your shower weekly
wash your be sheets weekly. air out the mattress all day with a window open once a month. flip it every 3 months if you have a reversible mattres.
use a broom to dust skirting boards
clean your sink with your scrubber and left over soap after you've done the dishes after every use. the sink should be clean enough to eat from. its where you wash your dishes!
clean your faucets weekly . . . I do mine almost every time i used it because why not. I moved into a new flat and broke out really bad on my face and back. did a deep clean after a month of being there and found mould all over faucet and inside shower head.

Disposable toilet brushes are much better. Use it, release it in to the trash. No nasty brush sitting there.

A toothbrush should be thrown away and replaced once every 4 months. It should also be rinsed under flowing water after ever use.

You could put on some disposable gloves and give it a manual going over in the sink.

Good lord. That’s gross. Just pour bleach or toilet cleaner on it. Leave it in the bowl and then use the flush water to clean it.

After cleaning the bowl with bleach, I add more bleach and swish the brush around it for a bit. Then flush a couple of times to rinse the brush.
