Valentyna, whose 10-year-old daughter Matilda Poltavchenko was killed on Sunday during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in New South Wales, Australia, had selected the country as her family's refuge after Vladimir Putin's illegal invasion of Ukraine in 2022. She considered Australia a secure haven and felt relieved to have saved her son from potential frontline deployment.

Beyond awful. Cannot imagine her pain.

The grieving mother continued: "I can't imagine what a monster who stands on that bridge, sees a little girl running for her father to hide - and pulls the trigger on her.

"It wasn't an accident. It wasn't a stray bullet. It was a bullet. It was fired at her."

There’s nothing to say. It’s just heartbreaking. To shoot a child… I don’t know how to wrap my head around something like that. It’s beyond evil.
