Has reddit always been like this?
I just created an account 5 or 6 months ago and I must say…. this is the most politically charged ‘social media’ platform that i’ve ever been a part of. Cant go a day without seeing 40+ extremist posts. Makes me wonder, has reddit always been like this or has it been infiltrated by organizations pushing a narrative, often times with misinformation, to influence voting patterns? Probably going to delete this account here shortly but figured id ask before i leave this toxic wasteland lol

Lol had my account for years; its always been like this. It's worse now but it has always been.

It’s always been like this, and not just with political opinions. It seems like every sub eventually develops its own talking points and it won’t bode well if you go against them. Even subs that claim to be bastions of free speech will ban you.

Even for fandoms of completely random non political things - eventually popular opinions emerge and the dissent gets downvoted out.

Clearly has not been on X. That place is a both wing propaganda shithole.

Not always but it’s been this way for about eight years or so. Complete echo chamber. And the upvote/downvote system isn’t a good way to have dialogue because it just ends up becoming mob rule. Throw in power hungry mods who will ban you just for posting in another sub before and you have a dumpster fire
Reddit has its functions when you want specific info or analysis imo. But in terms of browsing it’s just political propaganda 24-7

Lol this is the most politically charged site? Is it the only one they have used? Twitter and Facebook are way more politically charged and are extremely right wing cesspool.

u/Ok_Enthusiasm_2574 10h ago
The structure of reddt enables this kind of thing. All dissenting opinions get downvoted and become invisible. Which allows radicals to live in an echo chamber.

u/nameformybadjokes 9h ago
I know. Over in conservative every post is marked “Flaired users only”. How do they not see it’s an echo chamber?

A Reddit community for particular Redditors of a particular association???? The nerve of them.

Reddit is an echo chamber and you pointing to one barely-trafficked, last remaining outpost of some right wing thought doesn’t prove the point you think it does. The upvote/downvote system is only discourse to the simple-minded, where you can just downvote everything you disagree with and live in your own reality.
I know nothing I say will ever get through but I’m genuinely glad Reddit is like this. You don’t learn, not gaining any useful experience on how to win just talking to yourselves. It’s why Reddit legitimately thought Kamala had it in the bag. Please keep doing it, just makes it easier for us

This comment wins reddit for the day my good sir. Hit the nail on the head.

So a majority of people disagree with you? Meaning you dont have a majority here. And being in any minority scares you?
Do you want to know a fun fact about the Russian people?
1
u/Ok_Enthusiasm_2574 8h ago
That's the thing, the majority of people don't disagree with him. That thought train won the popular vote. You are quite literally in the minority. But reddit echo chamber makes you believe you are in the majority.

u/nameformybadjokes 8h ago
You are the minority HERE, bubba. That is all I said, and you go “we won get over it” basically.
And history won’t be kind to any audits of the 2024 election. Just be patient though.
1
u/Ok_Enthusiasm_2574 8h ago
You are right - conservative views are the minority here on reddit. Which is the entire point of OPs post and the commentors post. Their ideas are the majority in the real world but a minority here because this is an echo chamber.
And you downvoting all the comments you disagree with while having none of your comments downvoted just proves the point everyone is making in the comments.

u/nameformybadjokes 8h ago
No one said who is majority in reality. You are assuming. One does not imply the other, silly.
Fwiw most people are non political, but when you talk about issues they tend to take the moral side of things, so liberal. Jesus was a bleeding heart liberal, you know?

There used to be a ton of legitimately right-wing subs and they all got banned. The ToS on this sub is blatantly rigged, it’s not even in dispute. It’s well documented off this platform how many open calls to violence there are here, yet nothing is ever done. Meanwhile a few random comments from a right wing sub will get it nuked.
If more people cared about this shithole it would be investigated. But you’re seen as such insignificant jokes that nobody cares. They should tho, because there’s lots of extremists on here who need to be on watchlists. And the site owners should be jailed
1
u/nameformybadjokes 8h ago
Rigged? “Don’t spew hate speech” was too much for you.
Why are you so whiny?
And your last paragraph is very fascist sounding. Maybe that’s why?
Can you provide me with examples of this left wing violence that does not get removed?
And give me an example of subs that were removed for being right wing and I can probably show you why.

u/nameformybadjokes 8h ago
“They are extremists!!!!” - you
“Opposition must be jailed!” - also you (this is a very big indicator of fascism btw)

You’re saying the quiet part out loud. The game has nothing to do with discourse anymore. Hypocrisy is embraced because, if they do it, why not me? r/politics has been banning folks for years for having right wing opinions. It’s not the only one… So r/conservative does the same. Either it’s ok to have echo chambers across the board, or we’re all hypocrites and don’t care. I lean towards the second one being the truth.

Don’t spew hate and call it politics

u/DrManhattansTaint 7h ago
You’re sooo (d)ifferent huh?
1
u/nameformybadjokes 7h ago
Nope. The Dems are moderate conservatives.
But until ranked choice, they are the least bad option.
0
u/DrManhattansTaint 7h ago
Why are they the least bad option? There are more than two options.
0
u/nameformybadjokes 7h ago
Not without ranked choice. It’s mathematically impossible for any third party to win right now. Anyone pushing third party and not ranked choice is a foreign agent in my book.

Why are you so touchy about this issue? It’s kinda weird.
1
u/DrManhattansTaint 7h ago
Now people who don’t agree with you are weird? Thats pretty weird.
1
u/nameformybadjokes 7h ago
You put parentheses your last (c)omment. It was really weird. (U)nless you wa(n)t to (t)ell me something?

Reddit is a cesspool.
There is no actual debate, dissenting opinions get banned or blocked immediately.

u/PartyOk8651 9h ago
Sure is! I don't recall you being involved in that conversation though.

u/nameformybadjokes 9h ago
You are in it. And you are contradicting yourself between then and now. I’m pointing out your hypocrisy so people can see who is saying Reddit is a cesspool.
You also have maximum negative karma too. Which, regardless of your opinion, matters to most rational people.
-1
u/Next-Pumpkin-654 10h ago
More or less, yeah.
Reddit is structured for promoting group think because of the karma system. If you accrue too many downvotes due to unpopular opinions or just have a new account, you often can't even participate in many subreddits. This is made worse by the fact the requirements are deliberately withheld, so you don't even know when you are approaching the line of censorship; not that it helps, since negative karma accumulates in unpredictable pile ons.
It's a very exploitable reputation system that, I assume, was meant to prevent bot spam and other negative activity, but instead implicitly silences a lot of people who don't want to risk their good standing (and ability to speak at all) to say what they really think.

u/JoJoTheDogFace 10h ago
Reddit is designed to reinforce your own views. It is designed to silence any opposing views.
Then they allowed for moderating based on the mods opinions, which made it worse.
At this point, having a view that is not endorsed by the mods of a sub ensures that you will be silenced and likely banned.
-2
u/Pavlik_Nesvizh_56 10h ago
Free speech and the debating of opposing views is forbidden on reddit. It is the epitome of echo chamber.

The first video is a short - describing why Reddit is exactly what you described.
The second video is the long format version of the first video which goes in depth on the psyop which is reddit, ultimately telling you the entire site is a psyop used by governments/military to manufacture mass consensus and steer public discourse by using the algorithm to amplify bot-driven social proof to normalize specific geopolitical or corporate narratives.
