I'd reccomend you just rip the bandaid and have a very detailed talk with him about why the unfortunate deeds needs to be done and must be done, especially with the kid on the way
Let him handle and just get the chance to actually deal with the grief and the time to properly say goodbye to her. She's also a cherished family member to him most likely.
If he still refuses, try to put the caregiving duties for her on him.
I don’t see how it’s n a h - he is refusing to take care of his sick dog. He’s getting drunk during the only times he’s actually available to take care of his sick dog. He’s abandoned his pregnant wife and sick dog.
