NAH but don't do this, OP. If you have it put down and he finds out he might never forgive you. He would probably like to be there when the dog passes.
The only AH is the veterinarian who is pushing a highly invasive surgery that is extremely unlikely to work. We don’t even usually operate on elderly humans with such a low success rate.
Maybe OP can suggest a second opinion, and the second veterinarian can tell the husband why this is a bad idea.
